Patient Describes Beautiful Experience

Martha Arabaciyan

After falling and breaking her hip, Martha Arabaciyan, 81, a Valencia resident since 1995, had hip replacement surgery at Henry Mayo. Two days later she entered the ARU for rehabilitation and less than three weeks later, after a full and relatively painless recovery, she was home.

Arabaciyan was grateful to her entire Henry Mayo team, including physicians, nurses, physical therapists and occupational therapists.

"Everyone there in the ARU does their job with plenty of knowledge and they treated me with a human quality," she said. "It was a great experience knowing people with so much knowledge. They were good people and they treated me very well.

"I never had a problem. I am a quiet person but everything I needed was done with love and perception. When they gave instructions with love and understanding; it was a beautiful experience."

Arabaciyan was especially thankful that there was no pain-none during her entire hospital experience. She recently attended a Henry Mayo employee forum where she addressed staff, doctors and volunteers.

"Thank goodness there was no pain; they used a patch so there was no pain at all," she said. "I am doing great now, walking with walker. I am doing better every day. I am perfectly well."

   July 2013
Construction Update-Detours and Closures

With an anticipated start date in July, the hospital's main entrance through Orchard Village Drive will be temporarily closed. The project is anticipated to take three months to complete. Parking in front of the main hospital, indicated by a yellow line (see illustration), will be closed during this time.

The construction fence will be moved along MOB1 in the front roadway, reducing the width of the road at 3 pinch points to 20 feet for two-way traffic. Cones will be set up to separate lanes at these areas. This is needed to install a high-pressure natural gas line for MOB1 in the fenced off area. Handicapped parking will be at the existing administration building, connecting corridor and PS1 handicapped parking areas.Other parking to relocate to PS1. The front turn around for patient pick-up/drop off will remain open.

With the roadway narrowed, staff is asked to please avoid this area and use the back service road to move back and forth. This is to help reduce the congestion patients and visitors will experience.

Emergency services including LA County Sheriff, CHP, LA County fire and paramedics, and AMR have been notified. Signage will be installed to help direct visitors.

Henry Mayo Named to Most Wired Hospitals List

Congratulations to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for recently being recognized by Hospitals and Health Network (H&HN) as a Most Wired hospital. Findings were based on a survey asking hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 659 surveys, representing 1,713 hospitals, or roughly 30 percent of all U.S. hospitals.

In its 15th year, the survey centers on the Meaningful Use of Health Information Technology. This includes adopting technologies to improve patient documentation, advance clinical decision support and evidence-based protocols, reduce the likelihood of medication errors, and rapidly restore access to data in the case of a disaster or outage.

"I am so very proud of what we have accomplished; it is an honor to receive this award," said Cindy Peterson, vice president and chief information officer at Henry Mayo. "Certainly, this award could not have been achieved without the collaboration between IT, physicians and staff. Our Henry Mayo team has spent years on the implementation of technology to enhance patient care and outcomes and this award signifies our success. But we are not done; we will continue to strive towards improving patient care through the utilization and optimization of technology."
