Crystal Radios

CEPD gives back to the community by promoting science and engineering education. Dave presented his crystal radio workshop to the 8th grade science students at Vikan Middle School.  The students had fun building and testing their radios.

Bumpy Flights and Passenger Frights: How Airplanes Survive Lightning

by Jennifer Kitaygorsky, PhD

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) requires that aircraft be protected from lightning. This means that the aircraft integrators (AI) go through a certification process for each new aircraft design, for which the electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) levels at each device fall within the design and test specifications. This talk will summarize the E3 sources, threats, and requirements that are commonly encountered, with lightning being the focus.

The Operational Amplifier
The operational amplifier is used as a basic analog building block by Electrical Engineers to accomplish functions such as amplification, filtering, adders, subtractors and various other versatile purposes. The Op-Amp can be simplified mathematically using an ideal model. Tim Groth has written a paper explaining how the ideal model simplifications lead to the equations for input impedance, output impedance and bandwidth. A link to this paper and others can be found within the presentations area on our website.
