High Efficiency Video Coding Standard (HEVC)
by Gary Sullivan
This talk will present the new High Efficiency Video Coding standard (HEVC). HEVC has been the most recent joint project of the ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG standards groups, and the development of HEVC brings together the technology advances made over the last decade since the completion of H.264 / MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC). A decade ago, AVC rapidly became the dominant technology for video world-wide, due to its doubling of compression performance relative to the prior H.262 / MPEG-2 Video standard. Now HEVC can double the compression performance of AVC. Since AVC has become approximately half of network traffic world-wide, HEVC can ease pressure on global telecommunication networks. Alternatively, HEVC can usher in an era of improved video quality and facilitate emerging ultra-high-definition (UHD) video services. The HEVC design was approved as a final draft in January 2013 by both ITU-T and ISO/IEC, and is now ready to be deployed for a very broad range of video applications. The talk will discuss the HEVC technical design, its deployment status, and new efforts underway to further extend its capabilities - including the standardization of application range extensions, scalability extensions, and 3D video coding extensions.
Gary received his B.S. and M.Eng. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Louisville in 1982 and 1983, respectively, and Ph.D. and Engineer's degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1991. He is a Video/Image Technology Architect in the Windows division of Microsoft Corporation. Gary has led the development of today's video coding standards. He has received many awards and is a Fellow of the IEEE and SPIE. More information is available on the IEEE SPS website.
