PRODUCTION @ S1

Photographer Gary Land flew into Toronto to shoot National Women's Hockey Team star Meaghan Mikkelson for SportChek. They split the day shooting her on ice at the Master Card Center and then at the Academy of Lions cross fit gym. S1 Supplied Equipment & the Photo Van Package + S1 Van Operator to aid in the production.

The Georgian Photography Graduates Portfolio event was a great success, and it was good to see long time members of the Photo Community attending this new style of event to help students meet potential employers.  This event was sponsored by S1 Studios Toronto, and Georgian put together a couple of fun videos that you can see below.

S1 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Its that time of the year again when S1 Studios Toronto, awards the S1 Award of Excellence to graduating students that strive for excellence in their photographic work. This year Students from Ryerson, Georgian and Seneca all won awards of $3000 each in services at S1 to create new portfolios.

Being passionate about people, absolutely everything creative and traveling through twenty countries confirmed to Catherine Simone that she should be a photographer. Georgian Diploma completed, she aspires to shoot editorial fashion and documentary. For now, she is excited to gain industry experience by assisting other Toronto photographers.

Lynsie Roberts grew up playing with dolls and daydreaming of fantastical stories. Her interest in photography was piqued during high school art class, where she staged a series of Barbie suicides for a final assignment. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Fine Art at Sheridan College and Ryerson University, developing a balance of fine art and commercial perspectives. Her thesis project, "Bad Taste", is a series of narrative tableaux that present a satire on taste and contemporary displays of wealth. She will pursue fashion and advertising photography in London and New York.

INSPIRATIONS

Economics PhD Sebastião Salgado only took up photography in his 30s, but the discipline became an obsession. His years-long projects beautifully capture the human side of a global story that all too often involves death, destruction or decay. Here, the Mick Jagger of the Documentary Photography World shows breathtaking images from his latest work, Genesis, which documents the world's forgotten people and places. This book project is one of the most ambitous projects in the world. See the Exhibition in the ROM while its still there.

June 23rd Sunday - Save the Date.

One thing about the current economy is a lack of fun social events for our industry.  So we had an idea to organize a motorcycle ride. The weather is finally good, and what is better than getting together with like minded people in your profession. Everyone is welcome. No fees, just enjoyment.

Ray Steinke & Craig Samuel are organizing the Ride starting on a Sunday morning, some nice riding, some nice scenery, and a few stops, maybe even some Go Carting! Send us an email and let us know if you are interested, and we will send you out the details.

A new piece of film making gear was just announced that could completely re-invent the complex process of camera stabilization. It's currently being tested and endorsed by Vincent LaForet, who's given us a little taste of what it's capable of.

Audio technology is a pretty stable industry, but manufacturers are continuing to experiment with new features to help sweeten the deal. This time, it's an interesting approach from Shure: a shotgun mic with its own internal recording capabilities called the VP83F.

Jonathan Yi shot some footage with a pre-production model of the Canon EOS C300 for one week in NYC. He has a great senswe of humour, but gets the tec points across about what the advantages are over say a DSLR shooting video.

FUN STUFF

So ubiquitous are images of cosmologist Stephen Hawking in his wheelchair, that the chair has become part of his identity. But there he is without it, in a photograph by Steve Boxall, floating weightlessly in the belly of a jet with joy on his face. It's seems so unlikely (Hawking has had a debilitating neurological disease for decades) that viewers are bound to do a double take: Is that ... Stephen Hawking?
