SUNDAY LETTER - APRIL 24, 2016
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Can You Join Us for the Relay For Life . . . Or Maybe Just Donate?

You will probably have seen this short video put together for the students by Communications Manager Heather Ramirez. What a privilege to be in the same room with those four brave, healthy colleagues!

We'd love you to join us on campus next Saturday for even just an hour between 3:00 and 9:00 p.m. And if you cannot make it, how about a small donation to our goal? It doesn't really matter which of our two teams you support.  http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=74183&pg=teamlist

We do hope to raise $20,000 towards cancer awareness and research.

Opening ceremony is at 3:00 p.m. on the field, followed at 3:30 by the Survivors' Lap and then the Caregivers' Lap. In the evening, the Luminaria Ceremony, remembering those we have lost, is at 8:00 p.m. If you cannot come and would like us to remember someone, just click the 'Light a Luminaria' button on the event website, and we will be glad to do just that.

What a great opportunity to involve your family in a school-wide, community-wide, and world-wide event!

WELLNESS TESTING
Dear Husky Families,

I would like to inform you that your son/daughter will be participating in the Wellness Program assessment during physical education class beginning Monday May 23-Thursday May 26. Our Wellness Program is a health-related fitness assessment developed by The Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research and is a research-based criterion referenced test.

Wellness Program is a quality assessment for three reasons:
  1. Wellness Program establishes a baseline of a healthy fitness zone from which students can set goals and check their progress (non-competitive) to plan for lifelong physical activity, maintain and improve their fitness level. Health-related fitness assessment measures students' cardiovascular, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility and body composition.
  2. Wellness Program provides recommended activity program options that will help students reach healthy fitness zones in those areas where they need to improve.
  3. Wellness Program does not place an emphasis on skill or sports-related fitness time. It does not compare students to other students.

Wellness Program tests all students regardless of age, gender, or ability. Students are encouraged to be self-aware of health-related fitness and take responsibility by setting personal fitness goals. When students focus on the process of doing their personal best, a more positive lifelong impact is achieved.
On test days please make sure that your child eats a balanced meal and gets enough sleep the night before.

We believe by providing you and your child with this health-related fitness information, you can lead your child toward a healthy lifestyle. A healthy student is better prepared to learn and perform in all aspects of life.

Dear Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance School Parents:

We will have a Financial Aid Workshop, Part I, with David Levy, Editor of Edvisors.com, for our 11th grade families on Saturday, May 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This workshop will inform parents about important changes happening this year with FAFSA and financial aid. The FAFSA application for the 2017-2018 academic year will be available October 1st, so it is important to prepare early and understand how the changes impact the financial aid application process. The RHP sailing team placed 11th of 31 boats at the PCISA Silver Pacific Coast Championship, one place ahead of Mater Dei!  The boys did exceptionally well in medium winds on the first day ending up in 5th place.  However, the winds on day two were very light and did not favor our heavy weight, strong wind team.  This was the sailing teams first time to qualify for the PCISA Silver PCC event and their first time to sail in Oakland.  With a young team of one junior, one sophomore and four freshman, they will definitely be leaving more schools in their wake next year.  The team brought one of the race boats to school during new family day and some new students expressed interest in joining the team.

SENIOR SPEECH: RYAN M.

I know you guys aren't going to want to hear this (Alex), but life is a lot like riding a dirt bike.  One of the biggest things is that even if you go down, you have to get back up no matter how hard it is.  When you are out in the middle of nowhere on your bike and you crash, you have to get back up. There is no one to save you.  You have to deal with it.  As you know from my previous injuries, I have had to do this.  I once crashed, got up and rode back to camp with several bruised ribs.  In life, if something happens, you are going to have to fix it yourself.  You can't just wait for someone to pick you up and carry you to your goal...
