FOLLOW THE HUSKIES GOING TO COSTA RICA
|
The Husky Costa Rica trip was incredible! Here are snippets from their blog:
"Before this trip, I only wanted a hands-on job in the aerospace field because it seemed like a cool thing that would keep me active and interested in something I am passionate about. As a result of this trip, I know that I want to help others enjoy starting to understand the unknown as much as I do." - Bria"I am passionate about helping people because I know everyone will hit a bump one day. I really want to be there for them and hope somebody will help me when I hit my bump. I never give up because I've given up before and I regretted it so much... I couldn't communicate with many people in Costa Rica, even my homestay mom. Even though we smiled, I was not sure we were connected, but when we were playing games, I felt like we were closer than ever...it may have been the spirit of sports or the laughs we shared...but at the end, I felt like we were no longer strangers." - Kelly
"I have learned to be thankful for the life that I was born into and that people have different lifestyles than mine. It is making me realize that I shouldn't be a brat if I don't get something I want because there are other people in the world that have less than me and would be thrilled to get all that I ask for." - Drea
"My first goal of this trip is for me to make myself mentally tougher. This means I am going to tolerate the weather and complain less. With a higher tolerance level, it will be easier for me to succeed in the future. My secondary goal is to help the world. By helping to build a classroom, we helped the local people. Coming to a place like this allowed me to see a completely new place on Earth." - Jimmy
"During this trip, I learned that I need to appreciate things more, even if it's just the small things. Staying in Dos Brazos del Rio Tigre made me realize that not everyone has life as good as I do. Happiness is not about where you live or how much money you have, its about the people who you are surrounded by. Although this town didn't have much they all seemed so happy and it made me happy. I noticed the small things, whether it was the 10 kids that came snorkeling with and us all splitting the leftover sandwiches we gave them; the way the women all would help each other carry things when we hiked to the river the one day; how our hiking guide stopped to help men in the river mine for gold; the way the whole village surrounded the soccer field watching the friendly match of fútbol going on. It all made me think that this is how life should really be: everyone being happy and appreciating each other no matter the amount of money or the area they live." - Simone " It has been a pleasure to travel with all of you. You were warriors through it ALL and I could not be more proud that you all faced, maybe even conquered, your fears of flying on small planes, bugs, darkness, the unknown, really big bugs, trying new foods and getting to know new people. You have set the bar high for your classmates who will want to go on this trip next year. Be the leaders you are and show them the way." - Ms. Ribaudo More reflections, recaps, and photos on the blog!

HAMILTON, THE ULTIMATE IN ARTS AND HISTORY EDUCATION
|
(The first version of this article appeared two weeks ago. It is rewritten and expanded here, correcting some misinformation that was included therein)
At the beginning of spring break, Mary and I realized a dream: a dream that we have been nurturing for all of . . . 3 months!
We saw the musical, Hamilton!
Before last December's holiday season, all I knew about this country's first Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton, was that his face is on the ten dollar bill and that he was shot in a duel by Aaron Burr. And then some good friends and supportive alumni parents gave us the CD of the musical, having just seen the show in New York themselves. They obviously know our tastes very well, because we did not stop listening to it, in the house, on our walks, in our cars, and even in the shower. I learned more about American history (the Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary periods) in those twelve weeks than I ever did in the previous 60+ years!
We became obsessed with Hamilton!
Did you know that Alexander Hamilton founded the US Coastguard, or the New York Post, or why he ended up dueling Burr, or even who Burr was? Did you know how Washington DC was chosen and established as our capital city and by whom? You may be surprised at the answer. (Insider hint: You had to be in "the room where it happened.") Did you know about the vital role played by newly-arrived immigrants and foreigners (particularly the French) in the nation's founding? And how soon thereafter we had to grapple with the dilemma of whether or not to involve ourselves in faraway conflicts. (Sound familiar?) Did you know that the runner-up in the presidential election used to automatically take on the role of Vice President? Imagine if that were still the case now! It's all there, and much more, in the intense, dense lyrics and catchy tunes and raps of Hamilton!
And, yes, we loved the show as much as our friends had expected. Our only minor disappointment was that George Washington was played by an understudy that evening, and he was . . . short. It didn't matter to us, of course, that the actor, like the one for whom he was filling in, is African American. Almost all the leads are played by non-white actors. No, it just bothered us that he was short!
YouTube is bursting with Hamilton. If you haven't been sucked into the vortex yet, try this:
And listen to the music, but be careful, you may never be able to get it out of your head! And you may never learn as much about our country's founding. Adamant that you don't like rap music? (I was until recently.) Ask me for the very special, personally compiled "Intro to Hamilton for People Who Always Thought They Hated Rap" CD!
"Immigrants, we get the job done!"

VANS CUSTOM CULTURE CONTEST
|
Vans Custom Culture was created to inspire and empower high school students to embrace their creativity through art and design and to bring attention to diminishing arts education budgets. Vans believes everyone should be empowered to express themselves creatively and should be given the tools to do so.
Congratulations to our 8 students who won the opportunity to create their designs in 3D on actual Vans shoes!
Jimmy Jia and Ian Johnson for Action Sports
Selena Feng and Ben Hong for Art
Lis aDu and COnnie Zhao for Music
Clive Dickson and Aubrey Sereno for Local Flavor
The final group shot of all the theme entries shows unity of design, clear criteria, vibrant color, and above all originality. Our students went above and beyond to meet the deadline during finals week.

- In this meeting, we will address ten of the most frequently asked questions. The topics covered pertain to a broad range of student ages, but parents with students of any age will find the information pertinent and useful.

- Am I the only parent not serving alcohol to teens?
- What are social host laws?
- Can kids go to parties safely?
- Can't kids use safely at home?
- What do we say when our kids ask about our own drug use?

A list of participating colleges is available at http://bit.ly/NCEFExhibitorSearch . This link is case sensitive.

We will have a Financial Aid Workshop, Part I, with David Levy, Editor of Edvisors.com, for our 11th grade families on Saturday, May 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This workshop will inform parents about important changes happening this year with FAFSA and financial aid. Amazingly, I'm the kid in the class of 30-something who has managed to go 6 years with barely speaking to the same 10 kids I see on a daily basis. It definitely requires some skill and finesse. I thought that things probably had to change when the words used to describe me went from "mysterious" to "intimidating." So, since I got lucky and my speech landed on my birthday, I'm gonna talk a little bit about little Daniel's birthdays. Maybe after this, you'll know me a little bit better. My first birthday - 18 years ago today: not much to know here besides the fact that I was beautiful. Blonde hair, blue eyes, I was basically everybody's dreamt-up sexy Australian surfer baby...Click here to read the rest of Daniel's speech.
