SUNDAY LETTER - MARCH 20, 2016
|
|
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
|
|
Our Senior Class Has Just Earned One Million Dollars!
The graduating class of 2016, one of our smaller classes, comprised of just thirty-five students, has already received more than $1 million in merit-based scholarship offers from selective colleges and universities across the country. This stunning number increases every day, along with their acceptances from the institutions themselves. In anticipation of April 29, the National Reply Day, this impressive class will choose from a host of options, from small liberal arts schools on the East Coast to large public universities in their home state, and everything in between. Our college counseling office works diligently, collaboratively, and individually with you and your sons and daughters to seek "colleges of best fit" where our alumni will be successful and fulfilled: yet another significant reason why our grads are indeed so successful when they get there. Our nation's colleges and universities recognize the meaning and value of an RHP diploma and of a Renaissance diploma and are not afraid to offer significant help in their attempts to recruit our young men and women.

FACES PROGRAM SEEKS HOST FAMILIES FOR TEENS FROM FRANCE
|
Have you ever thought about how exciting it would be to interact with and learn about people from another part of the world? FACES is a cultural exchange program that brings boys and girls, ages 13-17, from France to the South Bay every summer. These teens live in your home from July 6 - 26, 2016, hoping to experience American life, make new friends, and improve their English skills. They need host families who will open their homes to them. There are no organized activities during their stay, but informal group events are planned with other host families.
As a host family, your role is to welcome the teenager into your home by providing a bed, full board, transportation, and inclusion in everyday activities and routines. They are fully insured for medical, liability, and emergency home return.
This is a special opportunity that benefits everyone, as positive relations are built as a result of this exciting cultural exchange! To become a host family, call Linda Bair at 310-433-7318 or email FACELHB@yahoo.com.

SUPPORT THE COSTA RICA SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
|
On March 28th, students from Rolling Hills Preparatory and Renaissance Schools will embark on a service learning trip for ten days, in conjunction with World Leadership School, to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Eighteen of us are raising money to work on a Community Project that will be designed in consultation with the needs and desires of the Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre citizens.
It is our hope this trip will redefine service as:
- establishing a partnership instead of just donating money.
- understanding the importance of political and financial situations that impact a community.
- being respectful of and participating in different cultures.
- connecting on a personal level and listening to people of this community.
Your donation will directly impact this community. We appreciate your consideration to donate towards our project.

RHP ROBOTICS TEAM PROVES TO BE COMPETITIVE
|
The RHP robotics team competed in the USFIRST robotics competition held at the Long Beach Arena last weekend. Our small team of only 6 members and 1 mentor held their own against much larger teams from much larger schools. Having only 6 weeks to build the robot, the team was hopeful that the robot could score in all three facets of the robot game. The robot scored in autonomous mode, during driver controlled period, and in the end game. Our small team managed some wins, a tie, and a few close losses. In the end, the team can count the experience as a success with hard work and quite a bit of fun. Congratulations to the RoboHuskies!

SENIOR SPEECH: SAMANTHA R.
|
Life consists of a series of events that take you out of your comfort zone. These events shape the person you are and the person you will grow to be. Throughout high school I began to see myself make a bigger effort to step out of my comfort zone. Everyone has had an experience that they are not completely at ease with. During the summer going into senior year, I was shipped off to Florida for an internship. I was completely on my own with the exception of my older cousin. At this internship I would be working with bugs. This was a joke to me because I could barely deal with the occasional spider in the bath tub without freaking out. How was I supposed to spend a month of summer surrounded by bugs in an unfamiliar place? The answer: I wouldn't. But not even I knew this upon my arrival...
