SUNDAY LETTER - MARCH 13, 2016
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Only Best of the Beach?

You will see below that Rolling Hills Prep was named "Best of the Beach Private School" a couple of days ago: an honor indeed, but an honor that's got me thinking (again!). These rankings are so often subjective and even when they purport to be objective, like the rightly-maligned, US News and World Report's annual ranking of colleges, a deep dive is necessary to unearth the realities. So, what are the realities here, and what can we learn from them?

First, I reiterate . . . What an honor! Even though I need only a small push to get me to declare, "Only Best of the Beach? I say we are the best in the . . .!", it's the context and the times here that I focus on. To be sure, this world has good schools, great schools, mediocre schools, and downright bad schools. Unfortunately, too many of California's public schools, especially in urban areas, have sunk into that lowest category over the past half-century, after being lauded in the sixties and seventies as the best public schools in the world. No doubt demographics have changed dramatically over time, and hence the challenges of public schools have increased immensely. But the fact that California ranks close to bottom in its per-student funding, combined with some wasteful spending of those lean resources, has to have played a big part.

I digress. The context of this most recent award is diametrically different. Schools in the South Bay, public and private, are among the best in the world. And I've seen and worked in many schools across the world. So why RHP, why now, and why here in the South Bay? I believe it's because what we have been doing so well for 35 years (our "niche," if you like) is finally recognized as arguably THE way to go. What do I mean? I mean that our combination of RIGOR and SOUL, that "secret sauce" I spoke about last week, is now understood to be an essential part of great education. We prepare our young Huskies for success and fulfillment in college and beyond without stealing their adolescence from them, without burning them out in the process. Our students have not "had it" with learning when they enter college, they are thirsting for more. To be sure, our educational program does not provide a stress-free environment, nor should it, but our teaching methods, the accessibility of adults, the productive relationships our students develop with them, and the structure of the academic schedule itself all contribute to our students' strength and future success. They become comfortable interacting with the adult world, they learn how to advocate for themselves, and they enjoy working with classmates from a wide variety of backgrounds.

We are proud and honored, but not complacent. There is still plenty we can do to get better (remember to email me at pmccormack@rollinghillsprep.org.  if you'd like to join April 30th's planning session to begin that improvement process). And if you voted for RHP in the Best of the Beach survey, thanks!

FACES PROGRAM SEEKS HOST FAMILIES FOR TEENS FROM FRANCE
Have you ever thought about how exciting it would be to interact with and learn about people from another part of the world? FACES is a cultural exchange program that brings boys and girls, ages 13-17, from France to the South Bay every summer. These teens live in your home from July 6 - 26, 2016, hoping to experience American life, make new friends, and improve their English skills. They need host families who will open their homes to them. There are no organized activities during their stay, but informal group events are planned with other host families.

As a host family, your role is to welcome the teenager into your home by providing a bed, full board, transportation, and inclusion in everyday activities and routines. They are fully insured for medical, liability, and emergency home return.

This is a special opportunity that benefits everyone, as positive relations are built as a result of this exciting cultural exchange! To become a host family, call Linda Bair at 310-433-7318 or email FACELHB@yahoo.com.
HUSKIES GIVE BACK TO RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE FOR #WEDAY PROJECT
Upper School students going to We Day visited the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House on Friday night to bake cookies and play music for the families. The Ronald McDonald House is a "home-away-from-home" for families that have a child who is hospitalized, often for cancer treatment. These students have planned this event to qualify for attendance to We Day, a powerful, life-changing event that combines the energy of a live concert with the inspiration of extraordinary stories of leadership and change. We Day is on April 7th at The Forum.

SUPPORT THE COSTA RICA SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
On March 28th, students from Rolling Hills Preparatory and Renaissance Schools will embark on a service learning trip for ten days, in conjunction with World Leadership School, to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Eighteen of us are raising money to work on a Community Project that will be designed in consultation with the needs and desires of the Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre citizens.

It is our hope this trip will redefine service as:
- establishing a partnership instead of just donating money.
- understanding the importance of political and financial situations that impact a community.
- being respectful of and participating in different cultures.
- connecting on a personal level and listening to people of this community.

Your donation will directly impact this community. We appreciate your consideration to donate towards our project.

AUTHOR'S LUNCHEON ON MARCH 17
Los Angeles young adult writer Maurene Goo will be the featured speaker at the Author's Luncheon on Thursday, March 17.  All RHP and Renaissance Middle School students are invited to hear Ms. Goo talk about her novel, Since You Asked, and listen to her story of how she  became an author.

One of her book reviewers say
, "A dryly funny account of a teenager who feels like an outsider in her high school, family, and society in general . . . Goo capably demonstrates the pressures and expectations Holly is under, and that a sense of humor is valuable for dealing with both." -Publishers Weekly

"Had me laughing the whole way through . . . Holly is a character that will stay in your mind well after you put the book down. And the letters from her secret admirer sprinkled throughout were pure genius!" -Glitter Magazine

Click here to visit her website. Copies of her book will be available for $15.00 (make checks payable to Rolling Hills Prep).

SENIOR SPEECH: EMILY S.

When asked what I would write my senior speech about I responded with 'I'm not giving one' or 'the world could still end'. I couldn't even write my speech. I sat in front of a blank paper, knowing I couldn't stand in front of everyone and give my speech. I didn't write shout outs so I can run off as soon as possible. To be honest this is a nightmare. People in general are a nightmare.

Interacting with people has always been my biggest weakness. I don't speak up in class because I don't want to be wrong. When I do have to participate, I go over what I have to say a million times. Trying to burn it into my brain so that I won't stumble over my words. In ASL I'm thinking about weekend sign share before we even sit down. I hate talking in class. I hate being in front of the class. I hate having to interact with people. Sometimes I want to speak up but I just can't get the words out.
