SUNDAY LETTER - FEBRUARY 14, 2016
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
RHP/Ren to Host "Relay for Life" on April 30

At a local Rotary Club meeting in December, I sat listening to a great young presenter. Andrew Johnson was talking passionately about the American Cancer Society's annual "Relay for Life." http://relay.acsevents.org/site/PageServer?pagename=relay

Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay for Life movement.

I'll admit it, I listen to talks on this subject with a sharper ear that perhaps I did 12 months ago, and, as I listened, it became clear that he was pleading for a South Bay venue for this year's event. Long story short, RHP/Ren will host the "Relay for Life" walk on our campus on Saturday, April 30. Not only will the event bring many people here from across the South Bay, but I'd like to think that our own students and families would consider participating too. Not just to accumulate required service learning hours but also as an opportunity to volunteer together as families. Save the date if this interests you and like the Facebook page!

SUPPORT THE COSTA RICA SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
On March 28th, students from Rolling Hills Preparatory and Renaissance Schools will embark on a service learning trip for ten days, in conjunction with World Leadership School, to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Eighteen of us are raising money to work on a Community Project that will be designed in consultation with the needs and desires of the Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre citizens.

It is our hope this trip will redefine service as:
- establishing a partnership instead of just donating money.
- understanding the importance of political and financial situations that impact a community.
- being respectful of and participating in different cultures.
- connecting on a personal level and listening to people of this community.

Your donation will directly impact this community. We appreciate your consideration to donate towards our project.

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY: COMMUNITY HELPLINE
Directory Deliveries for Community Helpline
Community Helpline needs volunteers for the annual PV Directory Delivery taking place on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Rancho Vista Elementary School. Adults are needed as drivers and students are needed to hand deliver the small phone books. This is a great service learning opportunity for families to volunteer together.

Contact Ms. Ramirez for more information at hramirez@rollinghillsprep.org
SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY: KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
NHS is helping to promote an event in Long Beach to teach kids about healthy habits, including healthy eating and physical activity. Students from NHS will be volunteering to help get kids active at the fair. One of their goals is to make sure each kid at the fair leaves with a raffle prize. So, they are looking for raffle items kids can use that day to be active: all types of balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, etc. Items need to be new and each item donated will count as one service hour. There is no limit to the items students can donate, but if they want to donate cash ($10 is one service hour) they can only donate up to $20, or earn 2 service hours.

Items/cash should be turned in to Mrs. Wratschko (Room 8A) by March 4th. This is an awesome opportunity for middle schoolers in particular to get their required hours.

SENIOR SPEECH: ISABELLA B.

Get good grades, be a good softball player, get a college scholarship, succeed at the highest level. This has been my plan or key to success for as long as I can remember. Even when I was a little girl, I was constantly thinking about the future in my sport and eventually my mind drifted to asking myself, "What if?"
"What if college coaches don't like me? What if my game falls off?"
The constant recurrence of these questions drove me to miss what was happening in the present. I started focusing on the batter on deck instead of the one in the batter's box. I started worrying about the next game instead of the one I was playing in. I was so set on making everyone proud and not failing that I started to play for other people instead of myself. It was so easy to get caught up in pleasing other people that, before I realized it, I had never learned to please myself. I could never appreciate the triumphs. It was almost like I had a checklist of goals. I would check one off when I achieved it and move on right away. Never stepping back to say myself, "You did good Izzy."
