SUNDAY LETTER - JANUARY 24, 2016

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
|
Calling All Dads!
This coming Wednesday morning, January 27, we hold our annual Fathers' Breakfast. We invite each of you and your son(s) and/or daughter(s) to join us for a delicious breakfast and good company in the MPR at 7:00 a.m. Come along and meet other dads in the same and other grades, or simply enjoy a sit down with your child before you start your work day.
An additionally enriching part of this annual event is our tradition of donating lightly used men's clothes to "Clothes the Deal," an organization that provides suits, sports jackets, pants and, well, anything wearable, to men who have been out of work and/or without a home and who are lining up interviews for jobs. The organization specifically helps these men to dress the part as they seek to re-enter the employment market. One of our alumni (Jason Brusavich, '99) will be on hand to collect our donations.
And don't forget Classical Night the next evening, Thursday, January 28. We stretch the definition of "Classical" as our students present a rather diverse array of musical offerings: another opportunity to support and applaud our multi-talented student body.
The week finishes with our all-school Admission Open House on Saturday. Many of you will have attended this event yourselves when you were looking to apply to our schools. Please consider passing on the flyer to any suitable families you think might be interested in benefiting from a Husky education.

Teacher Professional Day (No Classes, Office Open) Monday, February 8
On February 8th, RHP and Ren faculty will be attending a workshop sponsored by the LA Unified School District called "The Power of Mindset, Nurturing Motivation and Resilience in Students." SENIOR INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTS
|
|
Rolling Hills Prep School and Renaissance School require seniors to do an unpaid internship in order to graduate. Students have worked in businesses, hospitals, schools, and non-profit organizations. Students are asked to work at least thirty hours per week for two weeks at the end of May.
The goal of the internship is to acquaint young people with the "real world," a world that they have been educated to enter, but do not know very well. They need to observe people at work, help with any tasks they can accomplish, take orders and fulfill jobs, show interest and enthusiasm for a career, practice business etiquette, and learn new skills. Many colleges require students to find and complete internships as part of their graduation requirements. We tell students that this internship is probably the start of several internships that will follow before they find themselves in a permanent job.

SUPPORT THE COSTA RICA SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
|
On March 28th, students from Rolling Hills Preparatory and Renaissance Schools will embark on a service learning trip for ten days, in conjunction with World Leadership School, to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Eighteen of us are raising money to work on a Community Project that will be designed in consultation with the needs and desires of the Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre citizens.
It is our hope this trip will redefine service as:
- establishing a partnership instead of just donating money.
- understanding the importance of political and financial situations that impact a community.
- being respectful of and participating in different cultures.
- connecting on a personal level and listening to people of this community.
Your donation will directly impact this community. We appreciate your consideration to donate towards our project.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST COLLEGE TOUR
|
Hello Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Parents:
This June, we will be offering a great opportunity for all upper school students (grades 9-11) to visit colleges in the Pacific Northwest. We will be traveling with another high school, so the original cost announced at the Fall College Night has been reduced to $1,999 per student. Group visits are a great introduction to the college touring process. Students return home more engaged in their college search, and with a better understanding of what types of schools to visit with family.
Colleges we are visiting may include University of Washington, University of Puget Sound, Evergreen State College, University of Oregon, Oregon State, Willamette, Lewis & Clark, Reed, and University of Portland.
Our Pacific Northwest College Tour is $1,999 per student, and will be held June 13th - 17th, 2016. Round-trip airfare, ground transportation, quality hotels, breakfast and dinner daily, activities, gratuities, and overnight security are included in the price.
The enrollment deadline is February 1, 2016.
To enroll, or for more details, please go to http://www.efexploreamerica.com/tour-website/1814993dw or call Education First (EF), our travel coordinator, at 888.333.9756 and reference our tour ID: 1814993DW. EF only requires a $99 deposit to enroll, and offers a free monthly payment plan. If you enroll now, your payments will be ~$350/month. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first five families to enroll will receive $50.00 off the total price.

I felt beads of sweat begin to seep out of the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet, I felt my heart begin to beat two times faster than normal, and I felt my breath begin to shorten with every moment that passed. This feeling wasn't new; I'd endured it when taking my ACT and when sending in college applications. In fact, I had felt it so many times that it had become a sort of comfort to me. But, this time it arose over something that was more trivial and yet somehow more terrifying, my senior speech... Click here to read the rest of Mia's speech. |
