SUNDAY LETTER - JANUARY 17, 2016
|
|
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
|
How Are We Doing?
Since the start of the school year, you will have been receiving feedback from us every month on how your son or daughter is doing. You will have come to conferences in October, gotten a follow-up call from his/her advisor soon after, received an update email from at least two subject teachers, and of course seen Trimester One grades in December. Extended mid-year narratives from advisors will arrive within a couple of weeks.
Now it's your turn!
It's at this time of the year that I like to reach out to you to ask for your feedback. Would you take just a few moments to email me ONE thing that you feel we've done particularly well and ONE thing you would like to have seen us do better this year? I very much appreciate receiving these annual pulse-takes, and I do look for trends that help us become better and better each year. You may think I already know about a strong or a weak spot or two, but please don't assume I do. And if you'd prefer to come in and chat, or talk briefly on the phone, then let's do that. Nothing is "off the table" here, so please do let me know.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Peter
(310) 791-1101 x107
(Note: We will do a more extended, formal, and optionally anonymous survey later in the year as well. And new families should know that we also ask students to complete an anonymous "evaluation of program" each year. The more feedback we get, the better we can spot trends.)

CONGRATULATIONS TO RAFAEL B. AND CHRISTOPHER K.
|
Congratulations to juniors Rafael B. and Christopher K. for starting a First Lego League (FLL) Robotics program at Van Deene Avenue Elementary School. In the spring of 2015, Rafe and Chris worked with a group of 6th graders after school in a robotics club to teach the basics of FLL. From September to November, they continued their volunteering at Van Deene by mentoring the students and training the adult coaches to compete in the FLL challenge. This is the first year that Van Deene has competed in the First Lego League challenge. Jennifer Chung, Principal of Van Deene Elementary, recognizes Rafi and Chris for teaching their students about robot design, programming, team-building, and competition. As a result, the school now has a sustainable robotics program for future classes to compete in the First Lego League.
Rafi and Chris have been working with Van Deene on this project since last year, and are currently working on developing a sustainable program to implement in other schools.

SENIOR INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTS
|
|
Rolling Hills Prep School and Renaissance School require seniors to do an unpaid internship in order to graduate. Students have worked in businesses, hospitals, schools, and non-profit organizations. Students are asked to work at least thirty hours per week for two weeks at the end of May.
The goal of the internship is to acquaint young people with the "real world," a world that they have been educated to enter, but do not know very well. They need to observe people at work, help with any tasks they can accomplish, take orders and fulfill jobs, show interest and enthusiasm for a career, practice business etiquette, and learn new skills. Many colleges require students to find and complete internships as part of their graduation requirements. We tell students that this internship is probably the start of several internships that will follow before they find themselves in a permanent job.

Our 11th Grade Parent and Student College Night will take place next Wednesday, January 20th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. to kick off our college admission orientation season during the month of February. The information presented will be a general overview of the college admission timeline and various components of college admission. Students will receive the 2016 RHP and Ren College Handbook. We recognize you are eager to give your student the best advantage in the college admission process, so the evening will be followed by individual parent meetings during the latter part of January and all of February to discuss your student's specific needs and to create a customized college admission plan. Please send an email to bdyment@rollinghillsprep.org to confirm your attendance at the College Night on the 20th of January.
Parent meetings begin Thursday, January 21st. Student appointments will be scheduled separately with each junior; however, students are welcome to join parent meetings if their schedules permit. PACIFIC NORTHWEST COLLEGE TOUR
|
Hello Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Parents:
This June, we will be offering a great opportunity for all upper school students (grades 9-11) to visit colleges in the Pacific Northwest. We will be traveling with another high school, so the original cost announced at the Fall College Night has been reduced to $1,999 per student. Group visits are a great introduction to the college touring process. Students return home more engaged in their college search, and with a better understanding of what types of schools to visit with family.
Colleges we are visiting may include University of Washington, University of Puget Sound, Evergreen State College, University of Oregon, Oregon State, Willamette, Lewis & Clark, Reed, and University of Portland.
Our Pacific Northwest College Tour is $1,999 per student, and will be held June 13th - 17th, 2016. Round-trip airfare, ground transportation, quality hotels, breakfast and dinner daily, activities, gratuities, and overnight security are included in the price.
The enrollment deadline is February 1, 2016.
To enroll, or for more details, please go to http://www.efexploreamerica.com/tour-website/1814993dw or call Education First (EF), our travel coordinator, at 888.333.9756 and reference our tour ID: 1814993DW. EF only requires a $99 deposit to enroll, and offers a free monthly payment plan. If you enroll now, your payments will be ~$350/month. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first five families to enroll will receive $50.00 off the total price.

Four years ago, I was a soft kid. I came to America with many dreams. I believed all my dreams would come true easily. However, I was wrong. Before I came here, I lived with my parents. I lived in Xi'an, China. Our home was an apartment located in the city. I loved living there because it was the center where all the action happened. My mom took care of me every day. When I woke up in the morning food would always be on the table. And when I came back from school at night, my mom would cook my favorite food. My favorite food was eggplant and I loved how it made my house smell, but it always tasted even better...
|

All my life I have been extremely fortunate. Having an entire village taking care and raising me has been an amazing blessing. Although I love my family, most of the time, there is just one thing that I think about a lot; They are all adults. Not just one or two of them... No... Seven. Mom, Grandma, Grandpa, Semi-Legitimate Grandpa, Auntie, Auntie and Uncle. However, they taught me to see the world from a different perspective, a more mature perspective. Not just life in Torrance, Hermosa, or Gardena... But from Silver Lake, Monterey Park, and East LA. My family set the groundwork for me to come into my own and I think they've done a marvelous job.
