SUNDAY LETTER - JANUARY 10, 2016
|
|
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
|
Welcome Back and Happy New Year
We just completed our annual Life in Balance week during which we reminded students of the importance of keeping their lives in balance through exercise, stress reduction techniques, and seeking help when they recognize signs of stress and distress in themselves and others. This year we invited Dr. Michelle Sangalang of UCLA Health to speak to our student body about stress management and mindfulness. Students in grades 8-11 attended the assembly on Wednesday. Meanwhile, at various times of the week students participated in yoga, quiet meditation and journaling, and a stress survey.
Also this week we began a partnership with U Code, a STEM-based organization that teaches coding. Fifteen students have enrolled in our new elective which will be taught together by U Code and our own staff.
Preparations for our Annual Gala and Auction are in full swing. Please make sure to save the date of Saturday evening, March 5, to attend the event in support of our schools. And while I am talking of support, a huge thank-you to all who included the RHP/Ren Annual Fund in their end-of-year giving. We are looking for 100% participation in Annual Fund from all current parents, and some grades are getting closer than others. To give or pledge to the Annual Fund, please click here. Thank you, by the way, for using our Amazon portal for so much of your holiday shopping. The schools benefited by over $1,000 in December alone.
And lots is happening on the construction and facilities fronts as well. You will already have noticed work progressing on the long-awaited traffic light. When completed, a green arrow will facilitate left turns into campus, and the light will facilitate left turns out of campus up the hill. We expect to have it operational well before spring break. Additionally, the Board of Trustees has initiated plans for six new classrooms to be installed prior to next school year to accommodate enrollment growth and to bring the art program up from the lower campus.
Happy New Year to all Huskies everywhere.

SENIOR INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTS
|
Rolling Hills Prep School and Renaissance School require seniors to do an unpaid internship in order to graduate. Students have worked in businesses, hospitals, schools, and non-profit organizations. Students are asked to work at least thirty hours per week for two weeks at the end of May.
The goal of the internship is to acquaint young people with the "real world," a world that they have been educated to enter, but do not know very well. They need to observe people at work, help with any tasks they can accomplish, take orders and fulfill jobs, show interest and enthusiasm for a career, practice business etiquette, and learn new skills. Many colleges require students to find and complete internships as part of their graduation requirements. We tell students that this internship is probably the start of several internships that will follow before they find themselves in a permanent job.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST COLLEGE TOUR
|
Hello Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Parents:
This June, we will be offering a great opportunity for all upper school students (grades 9-11) to visit colleges in the Pacific Northwest. We will be traveling with another high school, so the original cost announced at the Fall College Night has been reduced to $1,999 per student. Group visits are a great introduction to the college touring process. Students return home more engaged in their college search, and with a better understanding of what types of schools to visit with family.
Colleges we are visiting may include University of Washington, University of Puget Sound, Evergreen State College, University of Oregon, Oregon State, Willamette, Lewis & Clark, Reed, and University of Portland.
Our Pacific Northwest College Tour is $1,999 per student, and will be held June 13th - 17th, 2016. Round-trip airfare, ground transportation, quality hotels, breakfast and dinner daily, activities, gratuities, and overnight security are included in the price.
The enrollment deadline is February 1, 2016.
To enroll, or for more details, please go to http://www.efexploreamerica.com/tour-website/1814993dw or call Education First (EF), our travel coordinator, at 888.333.9756 and reference our tour ID: 1814993DW. EF only requires a $99 deposit to enroll, and offers a free monthly payment plan. If you enroll now, your payments will be ~$350/month. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first five families to enroll will receive $50.00 off the total price.

Surprisingly, this speech isn't about basketball. I even shocked myself- considering all my AP Lang essays always have some tie to basketball. Since it is the start of the new year, I thought maybe I would try to talk about something other than basketball and step away from the "ball is life" story. New year, new Kelli. We all have those moments where we look back on the past years thinking about what we wish we had done differently. For me, in these past couple of years, I had a lot fewer, "I wish I would have done that"s because I lived my life a little differently. I stepped outside of my comfort zone...

SENIOR SPEECH: KAITLIN B.
|

Going into my freshman year at Narbonne High School, I was very nervous, but I soon found out I had no reason to be. I quickly found a great group of friends, I did well in school, and I excelled on the softball field. My first year of high school went great, it was full of excitement and new adventures. I had the same expectations for my second year, but unfortunately, those expectations were not met.
It became a burden to go to school every day. Drama started to develop between friends and jealousy got the best of some people. I also started to realize that my teachers didn't show any interest in my academic progression. They did not care if their students tried in class or not and some had no student-teacher relationships. My life felt dull and tedious. I woke up in the morning, I went to school, I practiced, I did homework, and then I slept. That was my routine five days a week. It felt like a never ending cycle. My parents noticed a change in me and knew something was wrong..
