SUNDAY LETTER - DECEMBER 13, 2015
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Finals Week Logistics

All the logistics for first trimester finals week are in this Sunday letter, as well as being calendared on both schools' websites. Upper schoolers and any 8th graders taking upper school classes will sit exams and have associated early dismissals, bus schedules, and lunch deliveries, on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Monday and Tuesday for them will be devoted to in-class review sessions. Middle school scheduling is normal Monday and Tuesday, but look for their special schedules Wednesday through Friday.

Also further down in this letter is information about immunizations and the California State changes that will be effective January 1. The information is essential for current 5th and 6th grade families and on an "FYI" basis for others. In a nutshell, measles immunizations are added as a requirement for attendance at any school in California, however, proof of immunization is required only upon entering 7th grade or changing school. When proof is required, families may no longer opt out of immunization and attend a California public or private school, unless a request for exemption is filed with the school (in our case with Yesela Tadeo ytadeo@rollinghillsprep.org) by January 1, 2016. No action by current families is required at the moment except by any current 5th or 6th grade families wanting an exemption. Everyone else is grandfathered in.  However, if your family has a sibling newly applying to ANY GRADE at either school for the fall, and you want an exemption, you must request that exemption by January 1.

SENIOR SPEECH: LILY ZUKER

When I was in elementary and middle school I quickly realized that I did not learn as fast as everyone else. I had trouble grasping the concepts and it made me feel like a failure. I remember studying for a test in 6th grade. I made dozens of flash cards and even woke up early to study. I entered the class with confidence that I could succeed. However, as I sat down to take the exam, a large wave of fear had crashed down on my body. I forgot some of the information that I had recited perfectly a few hours ago. My confidence rapidly decreased and I wanted to disappear from this nightmare. After the test was over, my self worth sunk to an all time low. I kept hearing my friends say that the test was super easy and they didn't even study. When the teacher finished grading the exams, she handed them back to most of the students with a huge smile on her face saying, "Good job!" and "Well done!" Then, she passed back mine. She placed the paper, upside down on my desk. No words came out of her mouth. Not even a smile. I carefully turned the paper around and saw a 69% printed in red on the corner of the paper...

SENIOR SPEECH: RAY ESTRADA

This may be of surprise to some, but this speech isn't about baseball or any sports for that matter. It's about determination. I like music. My musical taste as some of you know is not "mainstream." I like classic rock, alternative, blues, reggae, and other genres. The binding factor for me is the rhythm and lyrics. They mean something. I like to decipher the lyrics. One song's lyrics have stuck with me ever since I heard it. That song is Soulfight, by a band nobody knows called the Revivalists. The chorus reads like this: "So I'm gonna stand here by your fire, cause it's a cold one tonight/I'm taking care of Soulfight, and you're the reason why/ I don't ask questions and I don't tell no lies, that's the reason why/ I'm taking care of Soulfight, and you're the reason why." The question is: what is Soulfight?...
