SUNDAY LETTER - NOVEMBER 15, 2015
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Annual Fund, The Protein Needed to Strengthen the Schools

In the past week or so you will have received a letter from our development office encouraging you to contribute to this year's RHP/Renaissance Annual Fund, "You give...We guide...They grow".  Money raised each year through Annual Fund goes straight to support and enhance your child's education here at our two schools, and we do expect each family to contribute an amount that is comfortable (or perhaps even ever so slightly uncomfortable!). Last year we raised $300,00. Our goal this year is $350,000.

While tuition provides the "carbohydrates and vitamins," the basic nutrition of teacher compensation, facilities costs, curriculum materials, etc., money raised through the Annual Fund provides "extra protein for muscle strength and growth." We don't want to be just good each year, we want to be great, and we want to get better and better each year in what we do for your children.

Please consider making your pledge to this year's Annual Fund now. You can go straight to the Give link on either website and use your credit card (just think of those miles adding up!) or simply make your pledge.

Many thanks for your support. We go from strength to strength because of the protein you provide through Annual Fund.

Head of School Peter McCormack wrote the following Sunday letter piece back in January after the "Charlie Hebdo" killings in Paris. He has asked that we rerun it today, less than one year later, out of respect for those suffering in Paris this weekend. Friday's terrorist attacks, like those at Charlie Hebdo, took place in the neighborhood where he and Mary lived for their sabbatical three years ago.

A "Triste" Start to the Year

My wife Mary believes she was "parisienne" in her former life. We met when we were teaching there a little over 30 years ago and have been back almost every year since. For the bulk of our sabbatical year we lived Mary's dream in a 17th century apartment in the Marais district, just a few short steps, as it turns out, from the offices of Charlie Hebdo.

Our thoughts go out to Monsieur Gadot, our favorite corner shop wine merchant, always so interested to tease out details of Los Angeles; to the staff and diners behind the steamed-up windows of Chez Janou, the noisy, green-canopied, provencal restaurant on the opposite corner; to the children at the elementary school across the street from our apartment, their joyous laughter wafting up to our window every day; to the somberly-dressed Jewish families comprising the congregation of the huge and beautifully adorned synagogue right next to the school; to the frozen-fingered market stall holders, many of them of middle eastern descent (even to "monsieur carrotte," certainly the grumpiest vegetable vendor in the world); to the white-jacketed twenty-something waiters at the brightly-lit Brasserie Bofinger, sneaking out of the back door for yet another quick cigarette; and to the fragile, impeccably-dressed madame walking her elderly white terrier at precisely 6:00 p.m. each evening.

For the neighborhood. For the city. For the country. For all who value civilized freedom. We shed a tear for all.

And then our thoughts turn swiftly back to our calling at RHP and Renaissance, to working closely with you to educate our children to the highest possible standards so that they can contribute meaningfully to building a better world. What better antidote? And what better vocations could we enjoy than these! So it is with these latter sentiments firmly in mind that I say to all Huskies, "Bonne Annee," "Happy New Year!"

Pierre

DECEMBER DISCOVERY DAYS
The next set of Discovery Days is the first week of December! RSVP to Ryan Tillson at rtillson@rollinghillsprep.org.

The admission season for the 2016-2017 school year is underway and as always, we need all the help we can get from our current families in spreading the word. Below are the upcoming events and hope each family can send along the information to friends, co-workers or anyone else they can think of that would have an interest in learning more about our programs.

During a Discovery Day, parents will have the opportunity to meet current faculty members, students, and administrators during a school day. Information on academic programs, admission, financial assistance, and extracurricular programs will also be provided.

As we enter the admission season, we would like to remind all RHP and Renaissance families who have siblings currently not attending one of our schools, that we would love the opportunity of speaking with you in detail about the application process.
Siblings have priority at both schools.

RSVPs should be sent to Ryan Tillson at rtillson@rollinghillsprep.org.

SENIOR SPEECH: BEN TUFELD

When I was younger, I drove past an elderly crossing guard at a local elementary school on my way to RHP.  Every morning, rain or shine, he was on his corner with a big smile on his face.  It was clear that the children and parents depended on him. He worked so hard no matter what the weather was. The old man was struggling as his back was always bent but he persisted and carried on. Seeing his efforts filled me with empathy and I was determined to be hardworking like him. I kept an image of the old man's persistence and hard work in my head to inspire me throughout high school.
