SUNDAY LETTER - NOVEMBER 8, 2015
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Rebecca Kandel-Scott, Educator of the Year

This past Wednesday our photography teacher and Arts Department Chair Rebecca Kandel-Scott (aka "Ms. K.") was honored by the local Rotary Club as one of their educators of the year.

Rebecca grew up in New York City where she attended The Little Red School House, regarded as the City's first progressive school. The school laid the foundation for her appreciation of an education that integrates the arts into myriad other aspects of curriculum.

As part of Rebecca's time as an undergrad at Hampshire College in Amherst, she completed a photo research project in El Salvador requiring her to live for months with ex-Los Angeles Gang Members.

After founding the photography program
at a well-known progressive school in Los Angeles, Rebecca came to RHP in 2004. At the old campus, her classes were taught almost completely at the outdoor picnic tables, with the addition of a medium-sized cupboard to act as the darkroom.

If you viewed photographs recording Rebecca's impact during her time with us, you would see her:
  • diving deeply into the life of our school, inspiring students to become photographers in the digital age at the same time as continuing to teach them to develop and print in the traditional darkroom way,
  • leading outdoor education trips (and I don't mean just classes at the picnic tables) all across California,
  • acting as a concerned and trusted advisor to many, even after they have graduated,
  • volunteering to coordinate our emergency drill procedures as we moved to the new campus,
  • inspiring students to design and edit our award-winning Yearbook and Literary magazine,
Congratulations, Ms. K., a superb photography teacher and so much more.

Peter

DECEMBER DISCOVERY DAYS
The next set of Discovery Days is the first week of December! RSVP to Ryan Tillson at rtillson@rollinghillsprep.org.

The admission season for the 2016-2017 school year is underway and as always, we need all the help we can get from our current families in spreading the word. Below are the upcoming events and hope each family can send along the information to friends, co-workers or anyone else they can think of that would have an interest in learning more about our programs.

During a Discovery Day, parents will have the opportunity to meet current faculty members, students, and administrators during a school day. Information on academic programs, admission, financial assistance, and extracurricular programs will also be provided.

As we enter the admission season, we would like to remind all RHP and Renaissance families who have siblings currently not attending one of our schools, that we would love the opportunity of speaking with you in detail about the application process.
Siblings have priority at both schools.

RSVPs should be sent to Ryan Tillson at rtillson@rollinghillsprep.org.

SENIOR SPEECH: MAYU KOGISHI

In the first trimester of my tenth grade year, my life suddenly changed.
I decided to study abroad. Even though Tokyo and Los Angeles are on Earth, everything was different. I had to make numerous adjustments to the new environment. I could barely speak English when I came to RHP and I had to understand the difference in culture.

For example, American students have different interactions with their teachers. Also, I was shy about talking with people because of the language barrier. When I went to see movies with my friends, went shopping, or tried to speak in the middle of class, I was unable to share what I felt because of my English skills. I regretted choosing to come here. I thought, "If I just go back to Japan, I can have fun every day with my family or friends. I won't need to smile awkwardly in the middle of class because I don't get what other people say, or are trying to say, and I won't need to be scared of teachers who are probably going to ask me questions which make me feel humiliated to speak up in front of everyone..."

SENIOR SPEECH: ANNA SALZMAN

I believe that everyone has a purpose.  There's a reason that each and every one of us is here right now, sitting in this room.  But for years of my life I was stuck searching for my own purpose in this world.

I never truly understood what "depression" meant.  I thought all teenagers had mood swings.  So why was I being diagnosed with something that was just a fancy name for feeling sad all the time?  Starting in 7th grade my life began to feel bleak.  I kept looking for reasons why dark clouds were always gathering above my head.  Maybe it was the fact that I was struggling in the majority of my classes, or maybe it was because I felt so lonely.  I never thought it was because I was so-called "depressed."  That just seemed like a convenient excuse that I refused to accept.  For the next year I did a homeschooling type program, thinking it would be beneficial for my grades and my well-being.  In reality, it was the exact opposite...
