SUNDAY LETTER - NOVEMBER 1, 2015
|
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
|
And The Answer is . . . Balance!
Did you get a chance to look at the Wall Street Journal piece I highlighted last week?I have enjoyed the responses I received from many of you on the subject of "Helicopter Parenting: Good, Bad, or Ugly?" (my phrase). The article was interesting in that it laid out not only some of the conventional wisdom (the "bad"), but also highlighted a minority view ("the good").
My own view? Look to establish balance between, for want of a better expression, coddling, and a complete absence of a safety net. Neither is appropriate. On the one hand our children need to know we are there for them in a true emergency, but on the other hand we need to let them trip and then pick themselves up, dust themselves off and try again, without our racing in too quickly. Author Wendy Mogel refers to "The Blessings of a Skinned Knee" to describe how an over-indulgence in "saving" our children actually serves to weaken their emotional coping muscles. Sometimes we just have to stop ourselves, plain and simple. Equally, of course, we have to become experts in recognizing those times (normally few and far between) when our children do need to lean on us pretty heavily. Those times will vary with the confidence of the child, with the situation, and with the child's age.
One rider to the above oversimplification: The two approaches do not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. 90% of the time we can respond to what we see or hear from our children with ADVICE ON HOW TO FIX IT THEMSELVES. Taking time to use our own experiences and expertise to guide and advise our children how to deal with difficult situations on their own is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. Except under exceptional circumstances this should always be our first response: "How can I help my child grow and become stronger by sharing some strategies for dealing with this challenge?" Wendy Mogel has some superb specific advice in her book http://www.wendymogel.com/books/skinned_knee.
Great to see you at conferences last week. Our mission is to partner actively with you in the exciting, exhausting, often unpredictable journey of bringing up your children, our children. So . . . we are here too, for your sons and daughters, and for you!
Peter

In an effort to provide Outdoor Ed supplies to all members of our community, we are collecting used gear from previous outings. If your student no longer needs their headlamps, bedrolls, dry bags, or other items, please consider donating them to our new "Outdoor Ed Supply Closet" for use in the future. Leave any gear with the front office and we will make sure it is available to future Huskies who might otherwise not be able to afford it. Thank you.

ROLLING HILLS PREP ADMISSION EVENTS
|
The admission season for the 2016-2017 school year is underway and as always, we need all the help we can get from our current families in spreading the word. Below are the upcoming events and hope each family can send along the information to friends, co-workers or anyone else they can think of that would have an interest in learning more about our programs.
During a Discovery Day, parents will have the opportunity to meet current faculty members, students, and administrators during a school day. Information on academic programs, admission, financial assistance, and extracurricular programs will also be provided.
As we enter the admission season, we would like to remind all RHP and Renaissance families who have siblings currently not attending one of our schools, that we would love the opportunity of speaking with you in detail about the application process. Siblings have priority at both schools.

HUSKY HIGHLIGHT: TAFT BUCKLEY
|
Taft Buckley, RHP 7th grader, leaves a few times a year to major sailing regattas. Recently, Taft was invited to go to Sri Lanka with 6 other sailors. They were chosen at the last regatta in Newport a few weeks ago. There were 253 of the top sailors in the country vying for a spot. Of the 253, only 6 of them were from the west coast and just two from Southern California. Taft got 4 top tens out of 8 races. This is the order of regattas these young sailors are trying to get to: South Americans, Asians, Palamos, Garda and Belgium. He has been invited to represent the United States in the Asians Regatta. He has already qualified and competed in Palamos, Garda and Belgium. He was the top US sailor in Belgium and 24th overall, competing with kids from Italy, Spain, Russia, Belgium, New Zealand, and Malta. The winds were about 34 miles per hour out there.
