SUNDAY LETTER - OCTOBER 25, 2015
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Am I a Helicopter Parent? And, if so . . . So What?!

Here's an interesting Wall Street Journal article discussing a new book, How to Raise an Adult . . . written by former Stanford University Dean Julie Lythcott-Haims: http://wapo.st/1RMJwVx

You may be familiar with her themes. As someone who has been working in schools for almost forty years (Did I actually just write that?), I certainly am. There is no doubt that we parents (and there is a danger that those of us in schools may be culprits too) are generally more involved in our children's lives than our parents were, and that this intense involvement lasts for much longer into their lives than in previous generations. Cue stories about parents doing their children's homework, writing their children's college essays, and, yes, showing up at their job interviews! What I like about this article is that it offers not only the conventional wisdom--over-parenting risks turning out young adults who are unable to fend for themselves, deal with the inevitable curve-balls life will throw at them, or communicate with other adults in a meaningful way themselves--but it also challenges us, through the writing of Alfie Cohn, to explore the possibility that there has been too much "piling on" in these conversations, and that some of what we term helicopter parenting might be healthful.

Really?

What do you think? Let me know!

And I will share my own thoughts next week!

Peter

(Looking forward to seeing you all at Parent/teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday this week)
SCHEDULING FOR PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our Parent Teacher conference online scheduling system, Pick-A-Time, is now ready for you to set up appointments. Please follow these instructions on how to log on. You will have access to set up appointments through Pick-A-Time now through noon on October 28 . Also, please note that conferences are for parents/guardians only. Available conference times are listed below.

Thursday, October 29:  11:00AM - 7:00PM
Friday, October 30:  7:00AM - 2:00PM

Things to think about when scheduling appointments:
1.      All conferences are held in the MPR and there is no need to schedule travel time in between conferences. You may schedule back-to-back conferences.
2.      The gong is sounded every ten minutes - at your appointed time - you enter the MPR, find your teacher and sit down, when the gong sounds - your time with that teacher is up and you move to the next teacher.
3.      On the "Pick-A-Time" site - you may schedule back-to-back-to-back

Please call Yesela Tadeo at (310) 791-1101 ext. 197 if you have any questions.

red-sleeping-bag.jpg In an effort to provide Outdoor Ed supplies to all members of our community, we are collecting used gear from previous outings. If your student no longer needs their headlamps, bedrolls, dry bags, or other items, please consider donating them to our new "Outdoor Ed Supply Closet" for use in the future. Leave any gear with the front office and we will make sure it is available to future Huskies who might otherwise not be able to afford it. Thank you.
ROLLING HILLS PREP ADMISSION EVENTS
The admission season for the 2016-2017 school year is underway and as always, we need all the help we can get from our current families in spreading the word. Below are the upcoming events and hope each family can send along the information to friends, co-workers or anyone else they can think of that would have an interest in learning more about our programs.

During a Discovery Day, parents will have the opportunity to meet current faculty members, students, and administrators during a school day. Information on academic programs, admission, financial assistance, and extracurricular programs will also be provided.

As we enter the admission season, we would like to remind all RHP and Renaissance families who have siblings currently not attending one of our schools, that we would love the opportunity of speaking with you in detail about the application process.
Siblings have priority at both schools.

RSVPs should be sent to Ryan Tillson at rtillson@rollinghillsprep.org.

SENIOR SPEECH: RACHEL KERNER

Hi! My name is Rachel Kerner and I have been at this school for over a little over a year. Today, I am going to talk about a very memorable experience that that changed my life forever starting from the second semester of sixth grade.

It is a cool day in Napa Valley San Francisco on Thanksgiving Break. My parents, my brother, and I are all dressed up for my cousin, Elyse's wedding. But before the wedding begins, my mother takes me on a walk up a hill. Hmm. Why is mom acting so strange today? We walk up the hill for about 5 minutes. Then, we come to a halt. She tells me that she is going to tell my brother and me a surprise later on tonight. She says she cannot tell it right now because the timing just isn't right...

SENIOR SPEECH: ALEX HULBERT

Throughout my six years here I have seen and heard a lot of these speeches: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. A few, however, have stood out to me. For example I remember Adam Rice's and I think all of us remember Daniel Sumi's speech. Now these speeches were nothing special. They had no real hard messages and weren't real deep but they made us all smile and what's better than a good smile? This is when you as the audience say, "Is he really gonna do this speech about smiling?" Well you're WRONG! This speech has no message. This was about me having fun writing something. So I have made it my mission to at least make it memorable. Because of this goal I am going to tell you about the time I broke my arm in kindergarten. So here I go...
