SUNDAY LETTER - OCTOBER 18, 2015
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Help To Keep Our Children Cyber-Safe

This week students in both schools took part in our yearly Cyber Education presentations with Lori Getz. In an effort to prompt some follow-up dialogue at home about what was discussed at school, I'd like to suggest a few items to consider.

* Does your child have unsupervised access to the Internet (via computer or their phone) on a regular basis?
* Does your child play games that afford him or her a window to communicate either verbally or in writing with anonymous people?
* Is your child active on social media sites?

If the answer to any of these is "yes," please take the opportunity to discuss what you as a parent deem to be appropriate online behavior, and build on the knowledge the students gained from the school presentation.

Key points from Lori's presentation:
* Privacy on the Internet is in terms of control: once you lose control of an image, a text, any communication it is no longer private.
* Companies like Google have access to all of your activity online and make a lot of money selling this information to marketing departments of for-profit companies.

SCHEDULING FOR PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our Parent Teacher conference online scheduling system, Pick-A-Time, is now ready for you to set up appointments. Please follow these instructions on how to log on. You will have access to set up appointments through Pick-A-Time now through noon on October 28 . Also, please note that conferences are for parents/guardians only. Available conference times are listed below.

Thursday, October 29:  11:00AM - 7:00PM
Friday, October 30:  7:00AM - 2:00PM

Things to think about when scheduling appointments:
1.      All conferences are held in the MPR and there is no need to schedule travel time in between conferences. You may schedule back-to-back conferences.
2.      The gong is sounded every ten minutes - at your appointed time - you enter the MPR, find your teacher and sit down, when the gong sounds - your time with that teacher is up and you move to the next teacher.
3.      On the "Pick-A-Time" site - you may schedule back-to-back-to-back

Please call Yesela Tadeo at (310) 791-1101 ext. 197 if you have any questions.

STANDARDIZED TEST PREP CLASS FOR JUNIORS BEGINS NEXT WEEK
Hello Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Parents:

We are thrilled to partner with Dov Engelberg and Mulholland Prep to prepare our juniors for the SAT and/or ACT tests. Mr. Engelberg will be teaching a five-week standardized test prep class. We are having three rotations of five-week classes during the fall and winter quarters. The second group, who already know who they are, has been enrolled in the second block of classes that will begin next Wednesday, October 21st at 7:00 a.m.  Here is the schedule:
  • Wednesday, October 21st and Thursday, October 22nd at 7:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday, October 27th and Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00 a.m. (Please note change/Parent-Teacher Conferences, October 29th)
  • Wednesday,  November 4th and Thursday, November 5th at 7:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday, November 10th and Thursday, November 12th at 7:00 a.m. (Please note change/School closed Wednesday, November 11th)
  • Wednesday, November 18th and Thursday, November 19th at 7:00 a.m.
The five-week classes will prepare students for the ACT and the new or redesigned SAT, which will be administered for the first time in March of 2016. Most students take either the SAT or ACT in the spring of their junior year; however, students may take the ACT as early as December 12, 2015 (registration deadline is November 6th for this date). The redesigned SAT focuses on college-ready problem solving skills in math, reading, and writing with an optional essay. To learn more about the redesigned SAT, please visit http://www.collegereadiness.collegeboard.org. The ACT focuses on general reasoning in math, reading, science and writing with an optional essay. To learn more about the ACT, please visit http://www.actstudent.org. Also, click here for a PDF from Mulholland Prep that explains the differences between the redesigned SAT and ACT.

Many of our seniors have praised Mr. Engelberg's approach to standardized test prep. Their commitment to attending and completing the five-week classes resulted in more confidence about taking standardized tests and increased test scores.

Below is a message from Mr. Engelberg about the classes. If you have any questions, feel free to call or email me.  Thank you.  ~ Mrs. Dyment

There are demonstrable benefits to standardized test preparation. In addition to gaining familiarity with the tests themselves (format, structure, question types), students learn test-taking techniques and strategies, and are able to review content in a test-specific way.

Commercial test preparation, whether through group classes, online classes, or private tutoring, is a daunting and often expensive prospect. Still, as the college admissions landscape becomes more competitive, those who have quality test preparation obtain a distinct advantage.

This short survey class is not a full course, but neither is it a one-day "workshop" or "introduction". Mulholland Prep will cover the most valuable test-taking strategies and highest-yield concepts in a sort of "greatest hits" class. This is an outstanding value, as anyone who has older children and has purchased classes or private tutoring can attest. If there are any questions regarding the class itself, feel free to e-mail me at dov@mulhollandprep.com.

SENIOR SPEECH: JAMES CHEN

People all have their own stories. All our lives are made up of experiences that shaped who we are today. Every new experience forms an independent chapter to our journals. Every individual represents  a different cultural background and story, and that's why everyone is different and special.

Two years ago, I decided to come to Rolling Hills Prep to start my American high school journey. With strong curiosity, I came to visit RHP with my parents. During the tour, I realized that RHP is a small community and each class has a small number of students. In RHP, students are so familiar with each other. Moreover, students in RHP can easily build up a close relationship with their teachers...

SENIOR SPEECH: CHARLIE GILL

For those of you who don't know me is my name is Charlie Gill but to some I'm known as Chuckles. Honestly I have always wondered why I like a name like Chuckles. I just do. To start I am going to tell you all a little something about me. I transferred to RHP as a sophomore. My freshman year I went to Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. I really didn't have a connection with the school, maybe because they couldn't give me a lot of one-on-one time with the teachers.  All my life I had gone to big public schools so when I transferred from a school of a couple thousand students to a couple hundred students it was a big change. When I was about 12 years old I started playing baseball with the South Bay Rockies coached by Coach Will. I took a break and went to Pen for baseball. I remember the first senior speech I heard when I arrived here and I thought to myself there's no way I'm going to stand up here and give one, but here I am...
