SUNDAY LETTER - SEPTEMBER 20, 2015
MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL
Back to School with High Energy

How great to see everyone last Wednesday at the Grade Level Parent Evening. Rather like your children, you are generating a lot of positive energy on campus for the start of this school year. The collaborations between and among grade level parents contribute huge value to the schools and to your children's education in so many ways. It's that culture of cooperation, partnership, and support that lends so much added value to our students' experience. They notice . . . they internalize, and they engage even more proactively with their own education as a result. Thank you!

Next Thursday it's Back to School Night for you all. This time we focus exclusively on academics. Bring your sharpened pencils and be ready to engage in short lessons with each of your child's teachers. I look forward to checking your grades on My BackPack the following day.

SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY: WALK LIKE MADD
The Peninsula Chapter of National Charity League is inviting the Husky community to join them at the 2015 Walk Like MADD event on Saturday, October 3, in Long Beach.

Each year, their chapter participates in this important Walk in honor of Whitney Young, a 2005 Ticktocker and graduate of Palos Verdes High School. Whitney also attended RHP before she went to PV High. In 2006, Whitney was attending college in San Diego, when she was killed by a hit-and-run drunk driver at the age of 19. Their chapter is committed to supporting MADD, and to educating as many teens and adults as possible regarding the dangers of drinking and driving.

Please consider walking on October 3, or showing your support as a Virtual Walker.  Registration is available through the following link:

Look for their team "NCL - Walk for Whitney" when registering.

This Walk is a very special opportunity to help our kids see, first hand, the devastating effects of drinking and driving, and to play an active role in keeping them safe from this totally preventable crime.

Students will receive service learning hours for participating. If you have any questions, contact Heather Ramirez at hramirez@rollinghillsprep.org.

HUSKY COMMUNITY GROUP ON FACEBOOK
Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance Schools have started a new Social Media group that is designed to bring the Husky Families together. This is a positive discussion and feedback group open to Husky Families of students at our schools. Our goal is to create an open forum for Husky Families to feel welcome, ask questions and find support from other Husky Families within our community. This page is managed, administered and monitored by the Parent Association Vice President, Shari Runnells and Communications Manager, Heather Ramirez. The link to join can be found on the Parent Page on either web sites or just click on the link below. Our goal is that everyone join! Two School, One Vibrant Community. We are all Huskies!

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
RHP and Renaissance are committed to providing a well-rounded curriculum and school experience for students as stated in the schools' Missions.  To this end, the School has scheduled an off-campus experience for all students 5th-12th grades during the week of October 5th - 8th. The School contracts with outdoor/experiential education organizations to lead each program. School faculty and staff accompany the students as active participants and chaperones. Attendance is required for graduation.

SENIOR SPEECH: CHARLOTTE ZUKER

I don't want to lie in this speech. In fact, I'm done with lying about myself. I've been done since last year, after what was probably the worst couple of months of my life. I'll be entirely honest with you guys. High school was not the greatest experience for me. I'm not trying to scare any of you guys for the future, as these experiences were mine alone. I can't tell you what the future will hold for you, because all of you are different. But I'll tell you this. My freshman year was the worst year of my life until I went into my sophomore year and had an ever more god awful experience. It was in my junior year where I hit rock bottom. However, I never could have expected the reasons as to why I hit rock bottom that year.

SENIOR SPEECH: GEORGE ANGELOW

It was stifling hot in Barcelona. I was five years old, watching TV in my hotel room, but SpongeBob was in Catalan, a language I don't know. I sat pouting, wondering what on earth I was doing and why I was wasting my time this way. Recently, I have been thinking about the trips I've taken with my family and how important it is to have meaningful and authentic experiences in everything I do.
After taking me places for several years, one summer my parents decided to include me in the decision-making process, and I told them I wanted to go to Dartmoor in England. Dartmoor is the setting of a book we had to read in 8th grade English class, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle...
