Garden to Table
"Garden to Table teaches students how to create healthy, creative recipes straight from the garden." - Mrs. Cowgill
Garden to Table is a club on campus that focuses on bringing organic food grown on the campus green house and garden, to create healthy recipes. Until the outdoor kitchen is completely finished they team up on assigned days to bring food and the recipe used, to share with the group. When the outdoor kitchen is finished, we will all team up and think of recipes, using products straight from the garden, to create dishes and make with the group. This club has been around for three years and is led by Mrs. Cowgill and Ms. Tadeo with student leaders Sami R, Sara B, and Amber P. The club meets Thursdays at lunch in the garden at the west wing.
Follow the club's Instagram, @garden2table and look out for future Farmers Markets, where they will sell fresh produce grown from the greenhouse and garden!

Fun Facts about Halloween!
- The word "witch" comes from the old English word wicce, meaning "wise women." In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two meetings on Halloween night.
- The first Jack-o-lanterns were made out of turnips.
- Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.
- Halloween"is short for "Hallows' Eve" or "Hallows' Evening," which was the evening before All Hallows' (sanctified or holy) Day or Hallowmas on November 1. In an effort to convert pagans, the Christian church decided that Hallowmas or All Saints' Day (November 1) and all Souls' (November 2) should assimilate sacred pagan holidays that fell on or around October 31.
- Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween was once a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death.
- Harry Houdini (1874-1926) was one of the most famous and mysterious magicians who ever lived. Strangely enough, he died in 1926 on Halloween night as a result of a ruptured appendix.
- Dressing up as ghouls and other spooks originated from the ancient Celtic tradition of townspeople disguising themselves as demons and spirits. The Celts believed that disguising themselves this way would allow them to escape the notice of the real spirits wandering the streets during Samhain.
- Vampire legends may have been based on Vlad of Walachia, also known as Vlad the Impaler (c. 1431-1476). He had a habit of nailing hats to people's heads, skinning them alive, and impaling them on upright stakes. He also liked to dip bread into the blood of his enemies and eat it. His name, Vlad, means son of the dragon or Dracula, who has been identified as the historical Dracula. Though Vlad the Impaler was murdered in 1476, his tomb is reported empty.
- The black cat's bad luck stated in the Europe when the hysteria of witches practicing black magic had just hit Europe and alley cats were often cared for and fed by the poor lonely old ladies (funny how some things never change) later accused of witchery.
- Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.

Movie Reviews!
The Hobbit Trilogy
The Hobbit trilogy is a must see. Based off of the books this movie is a backstory to The Lord of the Rings and follows Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbit. If you love Lord of the Rings, then you'll love these movies. This trilogy has only been partially completed. Currently, there are only two movies out, The Hobbit : an Unexpected Journey and, The Hobbit : Desolation of Smaug. These movies will take you deep into the world of fantasy, magic, dragons, and many other mysterious creatures.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
These two movies are prequels to Planet of the Apes and intended to be a trilogy. These movies follow one revolutionary ape, Caesar, who changes everything. With the groundbreaking CGI you feel like the apes are really there. Director Matt Reeves strongly captures both the fears and joys these two movies portray. These two movies were highly successful and leave you wanting more. Time for a movie marathon! (It is a great idea to check out both of these movies and take in the amazing story behind Planet of the Apes.)

The Helpful Husky
Dear Helpful Husky,
How can I prioritize my homework? I never get anything done on time and my grades are dropping! Help!
-Procrastinating Gone Bad
Dear Procrastinating Gone Bad,
Everyone one will get bad grades at some point. Prioritizing your assignments can always help to get everything done. I suggest doing the hardest or most boring assignment first.
This way you have maximum brainpower in the beginning, and you can get all the boring stuff out of the way! As you get tired, you will lose energy ,and it will begin to get harder to do your work. Lucky for you, you already finished the painful, boring work. Now you can do the fun and easy work!

The following is a question that will be answered in a future issue!
Dear Helpful Husky,
I'm really shy and I'm having a hard time making friends. I have tried to talk to people, but whenever I start a conversation, I get nervous and start rocking back and forth or become antsy. How can I make friends and get over my social anxiety?
-Shyly Skittish
