MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOLPeter

Huskies Love the Water!

Our students are participating in two new aquatic programs this year, one on the water, and one in the water.

Members of the newly formed Husky sailing team are: Cade M. (team captain, 2018), Cameron N. (2019), Drea K. (2018), Margo O. (2019). High school sailing is open to students between 8th and 12th grade. The first regatta for the sailing team takes place on Saturday November 15, at Balboa Yacht Club.  Our team is hosted by King harbor Yacht Club, where we practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 to 6:30 pm. The sailing season begins in August, runs through July, and includes PCISA high school regattas, Shadden racing series and the Rose Bowl Regatta which is held in conjunction with a collegiate regatta and is often scouted by top collegiate sailing coaches. Sailors may also have the chance to sail in the Junior Olympic and the Pacific Coast Championship and National Championship regattas.  Huskies interested in joining are encouraged to contact Ms. Morris.

And swimming has been added to our PE program this year. Every Wednesday our swimmers (in grades 5-10) pile into the school bus and head over to Peck Park pool.  Ms. Hall works with the novice swimmers, teaching them stroke mechanics, playing games, and generally increasing comfort and competence in the water.  Some students who were barely able to swim a lap on their first day are now able to swim 60 yards without stopping. The more advanced swimmers dive in to complete workouts and improve their stamina and technique. They have been practicing their backstroke, breaststroke, and even butterfly, as well as increasing their distance. Swim workouts are proving to be a fantastic fall fitness activity.

Last week, Advanced Theater and Tech Crew students got to open the new lighting and equipment we received for the MPR. Some of the items included a light board, 10 theater stage lighting instruments, tools, a chop saw, and other equipment to build sets. This was made possible due to your support at last year's Gala during Raise the Paddle and the schools' commitment to the performing arts.

Come see all of the new upgrades at The Importance of Being Earnest on November 20, 21, and 22!
