Get Your PHX: My Florist Plaza Small Business Pioneers

My Florist Plaza

The goal of Get Your PHX is to show up, en masse, to support those who pioneer new restaurants, stores, bars and event spaces. We want to provide them a boost as they put their sweat, tears and wealth on the line to make life great downtown. Plus, we want to provide a chance for you to meet others like you, who want to get the most out of Phoenix.

This month, we celebrate these five businesses, all on the Northeast corner of 7th Ave and McDowell aka, "The My Florist Plaza.":

Boutique Solie - This is not a new introduction to many women downtown. Owner Beth Soliere is delivering something that many women downtown have been seeking for a long time: a unique fashion boutique. (I'm lobbying her to start a haberdashery so the guys can get in on the action.)

Community Florist - Shelli Walker is braving it in a very tough industry. But you begin to see the helpful coincidence that she is located next to a bridal salon, a beauty salon, a boutique.

NYPD Pizza has 11 locations around the valley and most folks don't even know its a locally-owned restaurant. People swear by this pizza and we want to highlight that you have choices when you are craving that late night pizza. Why send your money out of state to those big multi-glomerates when you can get your pizza right here?

Olivastro Oils -Specialty olive oils and aged balsamics are really coming in to their own in Arizona now and owners Aubrie and Shawn West are right on top of it. Phoenix is finally making it's place as a culinary destination and this shop allows chef's new and old, professional and non to expand their repertoire of food pairings!.You will get a chance to taste from more than 40 flavors at their boutique tasting bar.

Salon D' Shayn - Owner D'Lisa Shayn is getting gobs of attention for her award winning salon. This is a business that is definitely trending up. I'm not sure exactly what they do in there, but all my female friends love it and could probably tell you more.

Strut Bridal Salon - Like our other friends this month, Strut is offering Phoenicians choices. Owner Ann Campeau is taking a big risk on an intersection dominated by franchises. She remained open and survived all throughout the renovations and we want to acknowledge that strength.

Between now and January 24th watch for special offers, updates and announcements and then please join us to experience and say thanks to all the business owners who have taken such a personal risk to bring us things that we like, right in our neighborhood.

Phoesti-Thanks!

Hob Nobs

Thank you again for making the Phoestivus Market better than ever. I did not have an official counter (and if I had, he or she would be cross-eyed by now), but I think we had about 2,500 people the first night and as many as 3,000 the second night.

We sold out of Phoestivus Ale in minutes (I know, I know). But George Hancock of Phoenix Ale Brewery promises to make a lot more next year and get it in the local restaurants for you in the weeks ahead of Phoestivus.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again, thanks to our sponsors:

Thank you 180 Automotive, Cenpho.com, Crescent Ballroom, Core Crossfit and their Feats of Strength, Downtown Voices Coalition, Downtown Phoenix Partnership, FM Solutions, Local First Arizona, New Times, Oasis on Grand and Yelp.

We raised close to $4,000 for Community Food Connection and, more importantly, introduced thousands of people to the beauty of the open air market.

In Other Market News...

In Summary

The market continues to go up for residential resale homes. That is over 30% in the last year with another expected 20% in 2013.

I did a live market briefing for my clients and friends in November with the analytical support of Mike Orr of the Cromford Report. I am planning the next one for March.

I am starting to do these because the CenPho and historic markets are unique creatures that are not reflected in news stories about the US market or even the larger Arizona market. If you want to get in on the next one (it is invite-only), please contact me and I'll put you on the list.

If you want to see what we covered in the last one, with great insight in to where we are and where we are going, start with this link for a three-part series. The link to the next part is at the bottom of each article.

You will get access to information at these briefings that the average person simply will not have. It will give you an advantage, whether you are buying, selling or investing.

Huge News if You need to Short Sell

We were not certain that  The Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 was going to survive into 2013, regardless of the much ballyhooed fiscal cliff. The Debt Relief Act simply says that you will not pay taxes on the amount of debt you are forgiven if you short sell or foreclose on a home.

Here is the important take-away: Take advantage of this fiscal-cliff debt relief tax extension...now...while the next 12 months are still in play. Give me a call or drop me an email. I will absolutely sell your home, even if it is short sale.

Flipping Rules Update

If you are thinking of investing in properties and flipping them, you need to read this.

monOrchid Spaces Up for Grabs

MonOrchid has almost completely re-filled since the folks from Co+Hoots moved out to their new digs. They are renting space by the desk/month as well, which has incredible benefits if you are starting a new business, or if you are just tired of working out of your house and want to interact with talented people.

We have Songbird Coffee House right here, inexpensive collaborative office space, access to specialists in all fields and other amenities.

If you are interested in the specials monOrchid has to offer, please contact me at 602-456-9388 and I'll give you the skinny.

Shifting to Credit Unions

I saw a movie a few months ago ("Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?"), which featured our own Kimber Lanning, Local First Arizona's founder and director. I was inspired to move my business and personal accounts away from the my mega-bank. Let's call it "ChaseCitiFarg".

This series goes in to detail about the process. As a small business owner, I was intimidated by how long the process would take. That kept me from doing this for years. I wrote this series because I want to help you make the same move.

This was not as difficult as I thought it would be and I encourage you to invest in your community by putting your money in a locally-owned credit union.
