LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM FOR SECOND GRADERS

The YMCA believes that no child should drown because they never learned to swim. In an effort to teach all children pool survival skills, we are offering a free two-week swim program to all second graders attending York County elementary schools.

For more information contact Rachel Nightingale, Associate Aquatics Director, at (757) 867-3300 x 223.

KEEPING KIDS BUSY

We all know how important it is to keep the kids active and busy. Here are a few things going on in June that will help to fill their summer schedules:

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING FOR TEENS

This is a supervised, structured strength and conditioning class for ages 13-17 that teaches the fundamentals of muscle strength and flexibility.  Two levels are taught and they are required before teens may use the Wellness Center.  Register at the Welcome Center. For more information contact the Welcome Center at (757) 867-3300.

LEARN TO CHEER

Your child learns the basics of cheering at this specialty camp including beginner level jumps, stunts, motions and a dance routine.  Register at the Welcome Center now to guarantee a slot!

MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING

At Victory YMCA, Bushin Kan Martial Arts features Karatedo,  Jujutsu and we focus on practical self-defense skills.  Our basic physical skills curriculum includes strikes, kicks, blocks, escapes, grappling, throws, ground maneuvers, joint locks, holds, sweeps, break falls, and defensive options. Students are exposed to theories, tactics, skills, and methods adapted to meet modern needs and contingencies.

Our year-round program emphasizes real world applications and extensive physical, mental, and emotional development. Through vigorous physical training, students can improve their strength and overall physical fitness.

Progress in any martial arts system requires hard work, dedicated training, and perseverance. At Bushin Kan Martial Arts, we welcome anyone who earnestly desires to learn.

Classes are from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays. Registration is ongoing at the Welcome Center.  For more information, contact Larry King at (757) 595-8100.

JUNE IS FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE MONTH

This is the time of year when we are blessed with so many fresh fruits and vegetables!  Here are some ways to take advantage of the summer bounty with your children:

Visit a Farmer's Market- have children be on the lookout for a certain colored new fruit or veggie to try or make a scavenger hunt to find a rainbow of produce.

Make Fruit Wands- Stack a variety of cut up fruits on a kabob stick and top with a slice of star fruit for a magical and tasty treat.

Plant a Veggie Garden- Planting vegetables can be a great way to increase your child's interest in trying new, healthy foods.

Veggie Builders- Make a variety of veggie buildings, animals and people out of cut up vegetables, tooth picks and cream cheese for the "glue." The internet or Pinterest can supply you with ideas for this.

Make Fruit "Sundaes"- Layer fruit, low fat yogurt and crunchy cereal or granola in a pretty glass and enjoy!

Below is the much-requested recipe for the fruit trifle that was served at last month's National Senior Health Day celebration:

Fruit Trifle

1 angel food cake

1 box strawberries, washed and sliced

1 box blueberries, washed and sliced

1 large box instant vanilla pudding (may use lite)

about 2 1/2 cups milk

1 cup plain greek yogurt

1 small can crushed pineapple

1 cup coconut

1 can lite cherry pie filling (optional)

whipped cream

Mix berries together in bowl and sprinkle with a tablespoon of sugar or artificial sweetener. Let sit in fridge for at least an hour.

Tear cake into pieces and place in a 9 x 13 pan.  Spoon pie filling on top. Spoon berries on top of this.

Put instant vanilla pudding mix in medium bowl.  Place crushed pineapple in a measuring cup and add enough milk to make 3 cups. Mix together until well blended and then mix in Greek yogurt.  Stir coconut into this.

Pour pudding mixture over cake.  Top with whipped cream, cover and refrigerate at last 8 hours.  This can be made a day or two in advance.
