GFC MSU Math and Science Represented at STEM Submitted by Leanne Frost, Director of Developmental Education & Transfer Both the math and science departments of GFC MSU were represented at the STEM Expo Saturday, March 23. The STEM Expo highlights science, technology, engineering and math education and careers for Great Falls students. Val Smith and Claire Flood, math faculty members, presented activities that explored fractals. Fractals are patterns that often occur in nature and have many interesting mathematical properties. For example, snowflakes, seashells and trees are all fractals. The students at the STEM Expo were able to create a model of what they might look like as a tree by measuring the angles between their fingers and the proportions of their hands and arms. A mathematical model of a tree was created for each student with his or her own measurements. Students also created fractal trees using stamps and had the opportunity to create their very own Sierpinski triangle. GFC MSU students Jolina Waldner and Jessica Olthoff were also on hand to help with the booth. Both have taken M135 Math for K-8 Teachers from Smith and plan on becoming math teachers themselves.
Vanja Velickovska, a biology faculty member, presented activities that involved the human sensory system, especially the olfactory. All the posters presented at the Expo both were made by students in the Anatomy and Physiology II class at GFC MSU. The olfactory system not only enables people to recognize different smells so they can choose the right food, but also enables people to create memories and sometimes even choose their partners, said Velickovska. She added that the olfactory system is usually considered not to be that important; however, people don't realize how much they rely on it until they have a cold or the flu. The students at the STEM Expo were able to feel and then try to identify 10 different smells. People make associations with the color and the shape of objects in order to correctly identify smells. Expo participants were interested in identifying the smells, and while they were identifying, they were also learning the facts.
The event was held in the field house at Great Falls High School. According to the Great Falls Tribune, more than 400 students participated in the event.

Jana, thank you for going the extra mile!
Do you know someone you would like to recognize for their outstanding service? Show your appreciation by giving them a Great Folks award! Forms can be found in HR or on the intranet.
