Dustin Spivey named a Newman Civic Fellow

Great Falls College MSU student, Dustin Spivey, has been named as Newman Civic Fellows - one of 8 award winners from Montana and only 181 from across the country. The Newman Civic Fellow Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Nominated by their college and university presidents, these students are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.

Dustin Spivey, a second-year student at Great Falls College Montana State University, is a leader in many aspects. In addition to serving as secretary for the Associated Students of Great Falls College Montana State University and President of the College's Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, he also works as a computer tutor in the campus Learning Center. Through coordinating on-campus activities and volunteering for community projects, such as Project Homeless Connect, Dustin is a respected campus and community leader. With a commitment to service and a background in sustainable energy, Dustin is well-poised to make a difference in the lives of others as he pursues a bachelor's degree in engineering. Dustin's hard work, generosity, and desire to make our world a better place in which to live makes him an inspiring role model for his peers.

Newman Civic Fellow awards are made in memory of Dr. Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform.  At the core of Dr. Newman's leadership was a belief in the power of individuals to make a difference and in the power of connection with others. Frank Newman had a tremendous impact on American education and its role in the development of citizens who want to make a difference.  This class of Newman Civic Fellows embodies this spirit and dedication. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are made possible through the generous support of the KPMG Foundation.

GFC MSU students and faculty attend National Co-op conference

On February 15-17, Elizabeth Ayers and Pamella Niemiec, Great Falls College MSU business students, were selected to join more than 100 students from 16 states and Canada to learn about cooperatives from experts across the country at the National Farmers Union (NFU) College Conference on Cooperatives. The goal of the conference was to teach young people about cooperative business principles and history, to introduce them to a wide variety of co-ops, and to show the careers opportunities.

Dr. Marilyn Besich, Business Administration Program Director, encouraged the students to attend stating, "First hand experiences helps our students see the application of the theories and constructs that we study in class."  Dr. Besich accompanied the student and also attended the conference.  Thanks to the generosity of the Montana Farmers Union, National Farmers Union and their many events sponsors the students and Dr. Besich's conference registration, airfare and hotel accommodations were provided. Without this generosity the experience would not have been possible for these students.

Through lectures and tours, the conference exposed the student to a wide range of cooperatives. The speakers offered insights on co-op development here and abroad including efforts involving the Peace Corps and the Minnesota National Guard, which completed a mission to Afghanistan to work with farmers and their cooperatives.

Both the student and Besich said visiting CHS Inc. headquarters and touring the housing, retail, and marketing cooperatives in Minneapolis and St. Paul were the most valuable parts of the conference.  The tours allowed them to see co-ops in action, reinforcing the information presented by the industry speakers.

Coming from an agricultural background, Elizabeth Ayers quickly recognized the benefits in the cooperative business model. As the bookkeeper for her family's ranch, she understands the financial challenges of ranch life and would like to explore joining a co-op to improve effectiveness and efficiency of her family operation.

XLi 2013 - Extended Learning Institute

Submitted by Tawnia Cummings, eLearning Instructional Designer

On March 21st and 22nd, the eLearning team and fifteen faculty members from Great Falls Collge MSU attended XLi 2013 (Extended Learning Institute) held at The Northern Hotel in Billings, MT. The two-day conference focused on creating and delivering instruction within cultural changes and diverse learning environments for Faculty and Staff at all Montana Private and Public Colleges. The conference featured keynote speakers, Michael Wesch and George Siemens, and twenty-five breakout sessions. It was a wonderful opportunity to network, gain new ideas, and add to the dynamic online learning opportunities we offer here at GFC MSU. What was especially exciting (and vindicating) for the eLearning team was the discovery that GFC MSU is a leader when it comes to online course offerings, student and staff support, and innovations in technology integration.

The eLearning team, Wayne Breau, Cheryl Stanley, and Karen Vosen presented on "Helping Students Navigate the LMS Maze: Providing Equal Access by Leveling the Playing Field." It provided information on how our eLearning team assists students in overcoming obstacles to online learning through Desire2Learn. It was a well-attended session, and faculty and staff from other schools had many questions and compliments for the group.

MT Basic 100% Pass Rate

Joel Henderson, Paramedic/EMT (EMS) Program Director, reported the all the students from the Fall 2012 EMT - Basic passed their national cognitive exam on the first attempt. Both the students and EMS faculty are praised for the accomplishment. Henderson also stated, this is a historic event for the college because it's first time an EMT - Basic class passed the exam on the first attempt. The national average for first time pass rate for this exam is about 70 percent.

The EMT-B, an open enrollment course, is the gateway to the college's EMT - Paramedic associate degree. GFC MSU's EMT - Paramedic program is a competitive entry program that is national accredited by CAAHEP, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. In the past ten years the program has maintained an outstanding, near perfect, pass rate on the paramedic national exam. For more information the program contact Joel at jhenderson@gfcmsu.edu or visit the program website.
