Great Falls College MSU interior design student Teresa Anderson received honorable mention in the General Electric Charette, a national competition for students at National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) accredited colleges. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and will be a special guest at the 2013 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in New Orleans in April. GFC MSU is one of over 60 NKBA-accredited colleges and universities; only 10 GE Charette scholarships are awarded. Surprised and "beyond excited," Teresa is thankful for the opportunity to compete.
Julie Myers, Interior Design Program Director, ensures every Kitchen and Bath student has the opportunity to compete by making the competition a course requirement. The GE Charette not only serves as the final exam, but it's a way to incorporat real-world experience into the classroom. Charettes serve as a way to quickly generate design solutions and are commonly used in the world of architecture and interior design.
In this competition, students must create a kitchen design that meets the criteria of an imaginary client using GE appliances. "The students are given a base floor plan and an appliance package," stated Myers. "But, they have to depend upon their own knowledge of codes, NKBA guidelines, and basic design standards to complete the kitchen design in only three hours!"
Teresa was home-schooled in Billings by her parents, Cheryl and Carl Anderson. To enhance and enrich her learning experiences, she engaged in many educational opportunities in her community and online. At age 15, Teresa took a class from the Billings Career Center that ignited her passion for interior design .While finishing her high school curriculum, she took several additional college courses through MSU Billings and online interior design courses from Great Falls College MSU.
In August 2012, Teresa moved to Great Falls and became a full-time Interior Design student at Great Falls College MSU. Because she jump-started her college degree while still in high school, Teresa will complete her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Interior Design after two semesters on campus. After participating in the GFC commencement ceremony in May, she plans to return to Billings to complete her interior design internship. She will then start fall semester at MSU Billings to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science in Business.
GFC MSU Sealant Day - Free and Open to the Public!
The Great Falls College MSU Dental Assistant students coordinated a Sealant Day to be held on Saturday, March 23 from 10 am to 3 pm in the GFC MSU Dental Clinic. Dental Assistant and Dental Hygiene students, with the help of local dentists, are screening children ages 5-17 for dental sealants. The students will place dental sealants and fluoride varnish for qualifying children. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian - limited to two children per guardian, four children per household. This event is free and open to the public thanks to the many volunteers and donations. A "fun room" will also be available for the children.
Robin Williams, Dental Assistant Program Director, stated "Sealant Day is a great community service that also provides the opportunity for students in both our dental programs to work side-by-side with members of the local dental community." Community service learning, like this project, is integrated into both the dental assisting and dental hygiene programs to enrich the students' learning experiences, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Electrifying! Wind Turbine Output Data
The Great Falls College MSU wind turbine was installed nearly 3 years ago and has, on average, produced about 100,000 kWh of electrical power each year. Based on the national average, this is equal to powering 8.7 homes per year if were powering homes on our campus instead of the trades building.
