Higher Education "Untame Your Intellectual Spirit"

The first Untame Your Intellectual Spirit for Higher Education Month in January was a great success!   The evening began with a drum roll and unveiling of the Great Falls College MSU's new logo banner by the Student Government officers. Wonderful food, music, spirits, warm conversation, and representatives from our educational partners filled the College's Atrium.

At 6pm the formal program began with the reading of the Higher Education Month proclamation by the honorable Mayor Winters.  The Great Falls College MSU students' stories stole the show by illustrating the importance of higher education in Great Falls. Evening concluded, with a heart-felt presentation by GFC MSU Carpentry student, Bevin Chippewa. Bevin, Blackfeet and Chippewa Indian, presented a beautiful, handmade dream catcher to Dr. Wolff, CEO/Dean of Great Falls College-MSU, and Jo Running Fisher, Issksiniip Project Coordinator. Photos from the event can be seen on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/gfcmsu

General Distributing Invests in the Welding Program

Great Falls College MSU is pleased to announce a $30,000 donation from General Distributing Company.  This generous donation will be used to support the expanding needs of the welding program and will specifically to help fund the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) gap analysis. This analysis is the first step to the College becoming a CWB testing facility.  Welders who work on any trans-border welding projects are required to be certified by both the CWB and the American Welding Society (AWS).

"General Distributing Company is pleased to be able to make this donation to support the Great Falls College MSU.  We firmly believe in the educational opportunities offered at the College and are excited to be a part of their growth.  Being able to offer a quality, educated workforce to not only new companies looking to come to the area but just as importantly, to existing companies who have been in our community for a number of years will make Great Falls more competitive in the marketplace," stated company president,  Glenn W. Bliss.

General Distributing Company is a family owned business that has been serving Montana since 1948. The Bliss Family understands being a part of a community means supporting local schools and non-profit organizations by investing both human and financial resources.

Healthcare Career Day

Great Falls College MSU welcomed over 200 area high school students to the annual Healthcare Career Day. The event took place on February 12, 2013 in Heritage Hall. Two sessions were offered, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The purpose of the annual event is two-fold: to expose students to a variety of healthcare professions so they realize there are options beyond nurses and physicians  and to expose students to the importance of taking math and science classes in high school if they are interested in a healthcare career.

The students attending had the opportunity to engage with approximately 30 different healthcare providers from the community. They also performed hands-on healthcare related activities, including: calculating dosages of medication, viewing an endoscopy scope, matching food intake with insulin dosages for diabetic patients, performing endotrachial intubations, administering IV drugs, reading EKG's, viewing radiological films and many other activities that require math and science skills.

Campus Food Pantry

In November 2011, students at Great Falls College MSU opened the Campus Food Pantry to help students meet their basic nutritional needs. The Campus Food Pantry reduces the stress of food insecurity and allows students to focus on earning college credential and enriching their lives and the community. The Campus Food Pantry is sustained through in-kind donations from members of the community and a partnership with the Great Falls Community Food Bank. The Food Pantry provides primarily non-perishable items such as boxed meals, canned vegetables and fruits, and pasta. As well as, perishable items such as milk, bread, frozen dinners, chicken, and beef. With the addition of the Community Garden this spring, students will be able to find more fresh garden produce available. Since Fall Semester 2012, the Campus Food Pantry has donated over 4,277 pounds of food to students and has served more than 150 adults and over 100 children. So far, for the month of January, the Campus food pantry has donated over 850 pounds of food to students.

The GFC MSU Campus Food Pantry is located in B104 and is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3-5pm or by appointment. Students are required to show their current class schedule and a form of ID to receive food.  Donations are always accepted as long as they are not expired or out of date.

A special thanks goes to all the individuals who donate and to student government for supporting the Food Pantry and for making campus a better place for students. For more information, contact Erin at 406-868-5827 or Liz at vista@msugf.edu or 406-771-4324.

Read for Peace

On January 22, the Montana Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTAS of Great Falls held a  "Read for Peace" event to commemorate the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on American History. Volunteers read to kindergarten, first, and third graders at Longfellow, Loy, Lincoln, and Morningside Elementary school's. They read age-appropriate books on Martin Luther King Jr., peace, equality and social justice.

Volunteer Reflection by Dr. Deanna Koepke - GFC MSU Adjunct Faculty.

"I read to a group of first grade students at Morningside Elementary school. They were polite and attentive and seemed to enjoy the activity. The book I read was about bullying and I was not sure they would see the connection between MLK Read for Peace and bullying. I was amazed at their ability to understand that Dr. King wanted everyone to be treated with respect and that that is the same foundation of anti-bullying platforms. They understood that Dr. King was a "defender" and they could play that same role for others in their lives. It was a truly rewarding experience!"

Save the Date - Issksiniip Center Grand Opening
Issksiniip Center Grand Opening On Friday, February 22 starting at 1:00 pm, Great Falls College MSU will host a celebration to honor the opening of the Issksiniip Native American Enrichment Center. The Center will provide support for Native American students, specifically those awarded scholarships through the Issksiniip Project.

Through a partnership with Blackfeet Community College, we have been able to participate in The Issksiniip Project/Scholarship. This is federally funded program based on a Health Profession Opportunity Grant that the Blackfeet Community College received from the Department of Health and Human Services to provide Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income individuals the opportunity to pursue associate degrees in a Health related field, with the option to transfer into a 4-year degree program.

This program provides financial assistance up to $6,400.00 per annual year with additional services and assistance that would alleviate life stress and enable students to focus on their studies. Such services available include tuition and fees, books, transportation, tutoring, academic support counselors, as well as mentors to participating students.

Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places?

Submitted by the GFC MSU Library Staff

February is Library Lovers' Month and the Weaver Library Staff want to play matchmaker.  Let us 'fix you up' with what's bound to be a novel blind date!

We've selected a variety of books, wrapped them up in discreet brown paper and placed a literary content clue on the cover of each. Stop by the Weaver to browse the display and select your date.  You won't know the 'identity' of your hot date 'till you get it home. Will it be fiction or non-fiction? Funny, informative, a mystery, true-crime?  Sure you might be disappointed; but then again ... you may end up having the long overdue time of your life.

Stop by the Weaver Library anytime between today and March 1 and who knows, you might get lucky.  If not in love, then in literature perhaps?  <3  <3

Great Folks Award

Lee Anne Gills, Emily Peterson, and Mandy Wright are the January 2013 recipients for Great Folks recognition.  Lee Anne and Emily both jumped in and contacted over 100 students due to some last minute Biology schedule changes and helped our students through a stressful situation.  Mandy stepped in to help many students with their schedules over the break.  She also put together a great semester kick-off division meeting and tutor training.  Lee Anne, Emily, and Mandy - Thank you for your outstanding service!

Do you know someone you would like to recognize for their outstanding service?  Show your appreciation by giving them a Great Folks award!  Forms can be found in HR or on the intranet.  From these returned awards, monthly recipients will be chosen and all recipients will be recognized and entered into a gift drawing that will occur at the Employee Recognition Luncheon in the Spring.

Dental Hygiene Grad featured in the Helena Vigilante

Sara Noonan, a 2010 Dental Hygiene graduate, was recently featured in the Helena Vigilante. The article titled, Tooth care: Your Dental Hygienist Might Care More About Your Teeth Than You Do, is an insightful and entertaining piece that shares Sara journey from her decision to become a hygienist through college to the passion she feels for her chosen profession. Below is a excerpt  from the Helena Vigilante story that illustrates that passion.

"Hygienists are extremely passionate about teeth and keeping them in your mouth," says Noonan. "We are 100 percent here to help you and help your teeth." Even people who scoff at a profession involving scraping teeth all day still doesn't wear down her love for what she does. "It's creepy how much we love teeth," she says. "It's even creepier that we love cleaning them."
