Campus Food Pantry
Submitted by Liz Higgins, MTCC AmeriCorps VISTA Member
In November 2011, students at Great Falls College MSU opened the Campus Food Pantry to help students meet their basic nutritional needs The Campus Food Pantry reduces the stress of food insecurity and allows students to focus on earning college credential and enriching their lives and the community.
The Campus Food Pantry is sustained through in-kind donations from members of the community and a partnership with the Great Falls Community Food Bank. The Food Pantry provides primarily non-perishable items such as boxed meals, canned vegetables and fruits, and pasta. Perishable items such as milk, bread, frozen dinners, chicken, and beef are also available.
With the addition of the Community Garden this spring, students will have fresh garden produce available. Since Fall Semester 2012, the Campus Food Pantry has donated over 4,277 pounds of food to students and has served more than 150 adults and over 100 children. So far, for the month of January, the Campus food pantry has donated over 850 pounds of food to students.
The Campus Food Pantry is located in Room B104 and is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3-5pm or by appointment. Students are required to show their current class schedule and a form of ID to receive food. Donations are always accepted as long as they are not expired or out of date.
A special thanks goes to all the individuals who donate and to student government for supporting The Food Pantry and for making campus a better place for students. For more information, contact Erin at 406-868-5827 or Liz at vista@msugf.edu or 406-771-4324.
United Way Campaign
Submitted by Dr. Wolff, CEO/Dean
While not meeting their aggressive goal, United Way of Cascade County broke their fundraising records with donations of $1,070,963 being raised. These resources make it possible to invest in 28 non-profit agencies in our communities. A couple of examples of projects are the Make a Difference Day in which every second grader in the county was given a book and encouraged to read. 339 children received extra homework help with an adult mentor. 60 volunteers collected and sorted through 6,000 donated items for the "Stuff the Bus" project to help students be prepared to start school. Funding was increased for Meals on Wheel and the Dandelion Foundation that is a child abuse prevention program received resources, as did the Peace Place Respite Care center.
Special thanks goes out to Brianne Feulmer and Jason Harding for being the College's United Way campaign representatives this year. 36 people at Great Falls College MSU raised a total of $4,578.
