Common Ground
Implementation of Student Success Course
Submitted by Mandy Wright, Assistant Director Dev Ed & Transfer
Thank you to the members of the task force members who tackled the significant project of designing and implementing a mandatory student success course, tied to orientation and advising, for all students new to the College.
Our team worked to research similar courses at peer institutions, and determined the general content of the course syllabus. We also outlined criteria for determining which students should be required to take the course, as well as discussed challenges associated with making the course mandatory. We implemented the COLS 103 course this fall with five sections and so far have received positive feedback from students. The course is slated to continue this spring.
The Common Ground team leaders met to determine which tasks were complete and which teams were finished - and it was decided that our team is done! While the course is not yet mandatory, we have completed the largest part of the task, which was creating and implementing the course. I will continue to coordinate the course and will work with the advisors and instructors who have taught the course to determine any necessary changes to the curriculum.
