It's Banned Book Week
What would you do if you went to the library to check out a book, only to find it wasn't there? Not because it was already checked out, but because someone else didn't agree with its content and had it removed. According to the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF), there were 326 reported attempts to remove materials from libraries in 2011, making this situation all too familiar in some communities across the U.S.
From September 30 - Oct. 6, libraries, schools and bookstores from coast to coast will battle censorship and celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week, an annual event highlighting the importance of the First Amendment. Thousands will read from banned or challenged books, speak out and learn about censorship as the nation celebrates the right to choose reading materials without restriction.
"Closing out books kills ideas," said Laura Wight, Director of eLearning & Library Services at Great Falls College MSU. " This year marks the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week. Information is empowering and we encourage our campus and community members to battle censorship in all forms and celebrate their freedom to read." Weaver Library has several displays up around campus and is providing free coffee in the mornings during Banned Books Week 2012. Individuals are encouraged to stop by the Great Falls College MSU campus to view the displays. Montana residents age 16 and older are also eligible to obtain a Weaver Library guest borrower's card, which enables them to check out library materials.

Teaching Evaluations in Online Classrooms
It Can be Done!
ITC Webinar - Tuesday, October 9 from noon to 1pm in Room B136
What constitutes effective online teaching?
How is the quality of online teaching evaluated on your campus?
At Lake Superior College, a team of experienced online faculty and an administrator with years of online teaching experience tackled this sensitive topic, researching best practices to develop a new process and a new rubric for the administrative evaluation of online teaching. The process has gained strong support of both faculty and administration.
Great Falls College to receive grant funding
Great Falls College MSU is part of an eight-member consortium of colleges (including Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell) that received a $14 million grant from the US Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career program to develop online and hybrid health care and science courses to accommodate working students. Great Falls College will receive almost $1 million over the three-year program.
The Consortium for Healthcare Education Online (CHEO) will:
- add online features to face-to-face science courses.
- support the use of remote web-based science labs.
- create a regional allied healthcare career hub to support students in selecting programs and finding jobs in health science fields.
"As instructional technologies have evolved over the last 15-20 years, providing a high quality, realistic science laboratory experience for students working toward online degrees has been difficult. Having seen prototype labs between industry, two-year colleges, and universities in the State of Washington, it is exciting to be part of this collaborative to bring this opportunity to the health sciences fields", said Dr. Susan J. Wolff, Great Falls College CEO and dean. "Being a member of this powerful regional group of colleges and universities will be of great value to Great Falls College faculty and students."
Great Falls College MSU will be concentrating on preparing students who are taking the prerequisite courses required to enter the healthcare fields. "Providing meaningful and relevant learning during the first year of college encourages students to continue their education and be successful in their career choices," said Dr. Wolff.
