Hocus Pocus Pops Takes Over The Pavilion
Frankenstein. Beetle Juice. Magic Pumpkins. All of these and more could be seen at this year's Hocus Pocus Pops on Oct. 12 at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. More than 8,000 guys and ghouls of all ages came out for the Houston Symphony's performance of spooky classics from movies like "Harry Potter" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
The North Plaza was buzzing with the sounds of music and laughter as guests interacted with characters like Beetle Juice and Darth Vader, decorated pumpkins and played games. Other activities included The Pavilion Partners instrument petting zoo and tasting bug delicacies with the Museum of Natural Science.
In case you missed it, Party City-The Woodlands & Humble also provided a Haunted Graveyard, complete with a headless horseman, inflatable ghosts, grave stones and fog. Guests taking a ride on the Great Pumpkin Express were able to view the graveyard as they passed by on the train.
Before the event, the Hocus Pocus Pops "Spooktacular" Essay Contest finalists were announced on stage. , randomly chose Mallory Eaton, the 7th-8th grade finalist, was randomly picked as the grand prize winner and was awarded an Amazon Kindle Fire, a $100 Market Street gift card and had her essay printed in The Villager and The Courier. Other finalists included Logan Clark, kindergarten; Eddie Moore, grades 1-2; Sophia Lamb, grades 3-4; Abby Verzwyvelt, grades 5-6; and Max Beeman, grades 9-12. These finalists were awarded a $50 Amazon gift card, two Cinemark movie tickets, four VIP tickets to Hocus Pocus Pops, and had their essays printed in the program for the event.
The performance ended with the Houston Symphony's conductor Robert Franz as "Hedwig" leading the crowd in the Time Warp from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
