 Diapering and Toilet Training
A child's diaper is changed about six times a day. By the time your child is toilet trained they will have been diapered over 5,400 times! You and your child care provider can make the most of this daily activity by following these tips:

Connect -  Use this one-on-one time to build your child's language and teach things like parts of the body and concepts such as up and down. A pleasant, upbeat approach to the task demonstrates that body functions are a normal, healthy part of life.

Take Five_2Gather what you need before you start -  Never leave your child unattended... even for a second. Make sure your child care provider has an adequate supply of diapers and dry clothes so they can focus on your child's needs, rather than search for supplies.

Compare routines -  Discuss how often and at what times your child usually needs a diaper change. Share special instructions with your child care provider and try to adopt a similar routine so your child knows what to expect at diapering time.

Partner for results - Ask your child care provider for their advice - they' ve likely been through this before. Build on similarities and strive to work out differences to help your child achieve this important milestone.

Take Five_5Expect accidents - Learning to use the toilet takes time. Even children who've been successful may have accidents in response to stresses. Realistic expectations will help you respond to accident matter-of-factly and address issues causing stress.

Diaper and toilet time are prime opportunities to instill good hygiene and hand washing habits regardless of your child's age or stage. A positive approach to this daily duty will instill healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Q. Our 4-year old son has lost interest in the bathroom since his baby sister joined the family. He's gotten difficult to change and I feel like at his age, he should be potty trained. What can I do?
A. Toilet training success requires investment by all parties - the child care provider, the parents AND the child. The child is often the last one motivated to make the big move from diapers to underwear.  The big thing to remember is: Toilet training cannot be forcedLearn what you can do.
