Measure R was resounding defeated yesterday, with only 26.1% voting in favor, and 73.9% voting to oppose the measure. The initiative would have significantly amended the Downtown Area Plan that was passed by voters by 64% in 2010. In June this year, the DBA Board of Directors voted unanimously to oppose the measure.
As stated by Mayor Bates, "This is a landmark victory for Berkeley. It saves our green Downtown Plan that voters approved in 2010 and allows us to move forward with a more vibrant, cleaner and safer heart of the city."
