Experience the arts, creativity and technology of Burning Man without going to the playa at Berkeley Spark on Saturday, July 19th, 11am to 9pm! Berkeley Spark is a free community-driven festival where people create, collaborate and connect with each other through art and technology. This year's event features interactive art installations, music and ecstatic dance, Burning Man-esque clothing designers, handcrafted jewelers, a film series, experiential workshops, and innovative technology demonstrations. Several local Burning Man theme camps will participate, and fabricators from NIMBY will bring their artistic projects and mutant vehicles.

 

Building upon the East Bay's thriving art and technology climate, Berkeley Spark's "Innovation Tech Corridor" features local innovators, makers, hackers, and other creative types on-site to share their ideas and inventions.

For one afternoon, the David Brower Center will present Meet Your Maker, a celebration of the Bay Area's alternative economies. Featuring Treasure Island Flea's artisans, Institute of Urban Homesteading's radical educators, Urban Ore's scavengers, and Bay Area Community Exchange's (BACE) timebankers, Meet Your Maker allows visitors to experience the breadth and depth of locally-generated, more sustainable alternatives to standard commercial production.

 

Meet Your Maker audiences will have the chance to explore a local craft market in the Brower Center gallery by Treasure Island Flea and Oakland's Jack of All Trades, including including handcrafted jewelry, originally made fashion, live art, re-purposed furniture pieces and more.  Food trucks Cheese Gone Wild, Kenny's Heart & Soul, Naked Chorizo, Skylitesnowballs, and Drip Mobile Express, as well as local musicians Rob Reich, Kevin Kooyumjian, Shelby Lanterman, and Jack Cutter will be on hand to ensure attendees can fill their bellies, quench their thirst, and groove to the rhythm while they peruse the Maker offerings.




Sunday Streets returns to Berkeley on October 12, 2014 from 11am-4pm!

Sunday Streets Berkeley is an annual Open Streets event in Berkeley that closes Shattuck Ave. to car traffic for over a mile from Rose to Haste, so that people may use the space for just about any activity other than driving. Everyone from businesses and community organizations to musicians and artists use the space creatively, engaging the public and providing spontaneity and discovery. Sunday Streets is part of a global Open Streets movement promoting community, sustainability, public health, active transportation and economic development.

  

This year, Sunday Streets Berkeley needs a new Program Director! The Program Director position is a fulltime contractor position that starts immediately and continues through the end of October 2014. The Director will be in charge of marketing, public relations, and programming the event, as well as some fundraising (a crowdfunding campaign).Please apply HERE and forward this link to anyone who might be interested:

Have a voice in shaping the Library's three-year strategic direction. All community members are invited to attend a 90-minute meeting to help chart a course for the future of the Library. The Berkeley Public Library is conducting a series of town hall meetings throughout the City as part of an extensive outreach and planning process aimed at making the library as valuable as possible to all City residents. Allston Way between Milvia Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way
From June 16, 2014 to approximately November 14, 2014, Allston Way between Milvia Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way will be closed to allow for the construction of the Allston Way Permeable Paver Project. The project will install permeable pavers across the full width of the roadway. The sidewalks on both sides of Allston Way will remain open during construction. Please note dates are approximate and subject to change. Additional updates will provided as the project proceeds. Approximately 50 feet lengths of Allston Way just east of Milvia and just west of MLK will be closed to all traffic from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm daily from June 16 through approximately July 25th.
