The 28th Annual Jewish Music Festival showcases folk music, jazz and contemporary classical music of Poland, drawing attention to a thousand years of Jewish life and legacy. An impressive array of artists will perform, including Theodore BikelDavid KrakauerMatt Haimovitz, European Yiddish diva Shura Lipovsky, the world premiere of Bay Area composer David Garner's Vilna Poems, the West Coast debuts of the Polish ensembles Shofar and Polesye, and more! Come to the first-ever St. Patrick's Eve Sing-Along Championship for a night of boisterous singing and frivolity! Contestants lead a sing-along of their favorite tune and get scored based on audience participation (not skill!) in the format of Dancing with the Stars. Sing to compete for the Grand Prize of a "mirror-on-a-ball" trophy, or just come to support your friends! Either way, Berkeley's Best Beer is "on the house" with your entrance ticket! All are welcome to jump over a bonfire for "Chahr-Shanbeh Souri" on to shake off the darkness of winter and welcome the lightness of spring. A Persian ritual passed down since ancient Zoroastrian times, people create bonfires in front of their homes and jump over them as the sun is setting. Both Iranian-Americans and all who have an interest in the culture are invited to jump over the flames outside The Persian Center "home" at 2029 Durant Ave. Persian music, dance, food and craft vendors, cultural organizations, and children's activities add to the experience. Sponsored by Persian Center, this is a free, family-friendly, non-alcoholic event held outdoors, rain or shine.
