From Fr. Martin Solma

Dear Brothers,

Immigration issue affects us directly

During this week's meeting of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men, we were alerted to an immigration issue that is important to many religious congregations, including the Society of Mary.

The current legislation that allows foreign nationals who have religious worker permits (R1 visas) to apply for permanent residence (green cards) is due to expire on Sept. 30 unless Congress extends it.

We are among many congregations that will be affected if this legislation is not extended.

If you are willing, please read this notice from the Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC) and contact your elected officials, asking them to vote to extend this provision.

Thanks for considering the opportunity to influence this important vote.

Dear Brothers,

Changemakers - San Antonio

I had the honor of speaking at the Horizons program in Irun, Spain, last month and I was not able to attend Changemakers in San Antonio. MSJC Director Jim Vogt did; here is his report:

The San Antonio Changemakers conference brought together a diverse group of 78 people, including eight SMs and three Marianist Sisters. We explored how to deepen our response to the call to social justice and become more effective change agents.

We were inspired by the presence of several local San Antonio groups involved in social change. The keynote speaker, ethicist Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, challenged us to join in Mary's yes, which includes embracing what may seem impossible.

Participants identified a number of possible next steps that would move the discussions of the weekend into action. The weekend was a great experience.
