Dear Brothers:

Horizons 2016

As you may be aware, the Horizons program for those in the first years of perpetual profession began in Irn, Spain, on July 1. The organizers have asked each unit of the Society of Mary and the Daughters of Mary Immaculate to pray especially for two participants during the course of the program, which ends on July 26.

We are asked to pray for:

Sr. Prudence Adoki of Togo

Bro. Luis Alfonso Rentera of Columbia-Ecuador

Please hold these young religious in your prayers for the next three weeks.  Please keep all of the participants in your prayers.

From the Province of the United States, Bros. Brandon Alana and Andrew Kosmowski are participating, as are Bros. Jos Jess Ruiz Santilln and Nereo Ramrez Hernandez from the Sector of Mexico. District of India participants include Bros. Britto Murmu and Tony Nesam.

Bro. Tom Farnsworth
was scheduled to attend, but health issues with his mother in Canada prevented him from going.

This is a letter I sent on behalf of the Province to the entire Horizons 2016 cohort.

My Dear Brothers:

"Every hour is grace"

This past week the world community marked the passing of the great humanitarian and holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel. He once said:  "For me, every hour is grace. And I feel gratitude in my heart each time I meet someone and look at his or her smile."

May we know many such hours of grace this summer as we take our recreative rest and spiritual renewal.

Let us remember our brothers who will gather at the Marianist Retreat and Conference Center on Sunday for their annual retreat, and for Capuchin Franciscan Fr. David Songy, who will be preaching on the Jubilee Holy Year of Mercy.

Dear Brothers:

Archives on the move

The final shipment of documents and materials from the Marianist archives in Dayton will be traveling to San Antonio soon.

After some 40 years on the third floor of Roesch Library at the University of Dayton, seven truckloads of our history were moved to the new home of our archives on the campus of St. Mary's University.

We thank Bro. John Habjan, who assisted Province archivist Mary Kenney over the past year to prepare these materials for shipment. We also are grateful to the Roesch Library staff for their gracious assistance.

Part of the collection of the Marian Library will move into the vacated space on Roesch's third floor. Read an article about the move.

Facebook users may wish to follow the Marianist Archives, where Bro. Brian Zampier shares interesting items from our collection.

Dear Brothers:

New! Marianist Music Ministry

The Provincial Council recently endorsed an initiative aimed at promoting and sharing music in the Marianist Family.

The Marianist Music Ministry will be a collaborative of Marianist Family musicians, both lay and religious.

MMM has two goals:

  • To form a collection of music -- recorded, sheet music or lyrics -- composed by members of the Marianist Family or inspired by our mission and charism.
  • To encourage the composition of new music inspired by our Marianist mission.
Through MMM, music from different cultures, styles and traditions will be more easily available for download and playback anywhere in the world.

Some MMM members currently are working on a production called "Spectacle," an original musical based on the lives of the founders. The production will include original songs and celebrate the Marianist charism by highlighting events in the lives of our three founders.

The originators of MMM and the Spectacle musical are Bro. Stan Zubek of the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point; Jim Ford, director of the Marianist Retreat and Conference Center in St. Louis; and Nick Cardilino, associate director of campus ministry at the University of Dayton.

Please contact Bro. Stan to learn more about this new ministry. Watch for more details in the coming months.

Dear Brothers:

UD joins St. Mary's as a Fair Trade University

On June 30, the University of Dayton's outgoing President Dr. Dan Curran signed the official Fair Trade Resolution, making UD a Fair Trade University. UD joins St. Mary's University, which earned this recognition in 2015.

"This aligns our practices with our Catholic, Marianist principles, and affirms our dedication to deepening these practices. We will have fair trade goods in our retail outlets and bookstore, promote education about fair trade on campus, and ensure the goods we purchase as a university are ethically sourced," said Paul Benson, UD provost.
