From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

Bicentennial icon

As the General Administration announced earlier, a Marianist icon will be traveling the Marianist world during the Bicentennial.

This pilgrimage is intended to draw all of us to the focal points of our charism. It includes original letters by Blessed Chaminade and Venerable Adle, along with a Cana icon created by an Italian Marianist. The original of the Cana scene is in the chapel of the General Administration in Rome.

The icon's travel itinerary spans more than 20 months. The Bicentennial Committee will be in contact with Area Coordinators about its journey through our Province, which takes place from November through January.

This Sunday, the General Administrations for the Daughters of Mary Immaculate and the Society of Mary will gather with other members of our religious congregations and the wider Marianist Family in Agen, France, to officially begin the Bicentennial celebrations. Let us join them in spirit and in prayer, asking for a generous outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Marianist Sisters.

India

Bro. Dennis Schmitz and I leave on May 23 for a 10-day visit to the District of India. We'll meet with members of the Indian Strategic Planning Committee to develop their version of Vision 2020. Please pray for this important undertaking. Dennis and I will return to India at the end of December, joined by Bro. Bernie Ploeger, to work with the planning committee, the council and the chapter to finalize this plan.

While I am in India, Bro. Joe Kamis will be the point person for Province business.

Bro. Justin Quiroz

These days, Justin Quiroz is making his retreat in preparation for first profession of vows on May 21. Fr. Bill Behringer is directing him.

Let's pray for Justin and join with him on his profession day as the newest vowed member of our Province.

Dr. Dan Curran

On Wednesday evening, May 18, the Board of Trustees of the University of Dayton will honor Dr. Dan Curran as he completes his 14th year as the 18th president of the University of Dayton. A larger gathering of university personnel, civic leaders and others will gather on the evening of June 4 to thank Dan for all he has done in service to UD and the City of Dayton. After a sabbatical, Dan will return to the faculty of the university. Dr. Eric Spina begins his tenure as president on July 1.

Pentecost

May we experience an outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit as we celebrate Pentecost and mark the end of this Easter season on Sunday.

As we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost

The real miracle of Pentecost is not what was said, but what was heard: the Spirit of God overcomes the barriers of language and perception, opening not only our minds but our hearts to hear the Gospel of the Risen Christ. That same Spirit of God enables us to listen to the voice of God in the context of God's peace, justice and compassion, enabling us to hear what God actually speaks, and not what we want or hope or wish to hear.

As on Pentecost, God's Spirit continues to speak in the love of the Beatitudes, in the forgiveness of the prodigal's father, in the generosity of the Good Samaritan, in the hope of the resurrection.

Brothers, the gift of Pentecost faith enables us to hear the voice of God speaking in the midst of the clamor and busyness, the pain and the challenges of one another's lives, and now inviting us to embrace the life and love of God.
