Dear Brothers,

Meetings in San Antonio, Dayton

Yesterday, Bro. Joe Kamis and I took part in a meeting of the Marianist Family Council of North America. The leadership from the Society of Mary, the Marianist Sisters and the Marianist Lay Network of North America (MLNNA) met in San Antonio to share updates, plans for the future, and review reports from the two projects the Council sponsors: the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative (MSJC) and the Marianist Lay Formation Initiative (MLFI). Sr. Laura Leming is the chair of the Family Council.

Meeting of the Marianist Family Council of North America:
Bro. Joe Kamis and Fr. Marty Solma (SM); Matt Dunn
and Mike Wasno (MLNNA); and Sr. Laura Leming (FMI)

This week the University of Dayton is sponsoring a conference on divestment and alternative investments. About 130 participants will gather for the three-day event. I am happy to serve on an afternoon panel with two representatives from the Franciscan Sisters of Mary "SSM Health" health care system, along with George Hanley from the UD board and the UD Hanley Sustainability Institute.

Bicentennial "virtual pilgrimage"

We have received a letter from the General Councils of the SM and FMI concerning the "virtual pilgrimage" to mark the bicentennial celebration of our congregations. An icon, flanked by original letters from Blessed William Joseph Chaminade and Venerable Mother Adle, will tour the entire Marianist world during the course of the bicentennial period. It is scheduled for North America from Nov. 1, 2016, through Jan. 26, 2017. A program for its presence in the Province will be developed, and the Bicentennial Committee will offer recommendations for celebrating its visit to Province communities.

Bro. Esteban Reyes Durn from the Sector of Mexico has received a visa and will arrive in San Antonio on Nov. 8. He will reside at the Holy Rosary community and assist with parish ministries while also improving his language skills. Welcome, Bro. Esteban.

During this month of November, let us remember our brothers who have died during the past year. May they know the mercy and kindness of the Risen Lord.

Fraternally,

Dear Brothers:

Revising the Province Directory

The Provincial Council has established the "Province Directory Revision Committee."

Our Rule of Life 7.106 states: "After appropriate consultation with the members, each Province, through the Provincial Chapter, will develop and promulgate a Province Directory which determines specific application of the Rule of Life, particular governance structures, and approved procedures. The Directory shall be revised periodically as needed. The text is submitted to the Superior General and his Council for ratification."

The mandate of the committee is to develop a two-year process so the Province membership, the Provincial Council and the Provincial Chapter can submit ideas and suggestions to improve the document. Before being submitted to the General Council for ratification, the Provincial Chapter must approve the document.

Bro. Tom Giardino and I are co-chairing the committee. Other members include Fr. Tim Dwyer, Bro. Victor Forlani, Fr. Pat McDaid and Bro. Rich Thompson.

The Provincial Council thanks the committee members for giving their time to organize the process for this revision. The first meeting will be on Nov. 12. Following that meeting, the Province membership will be asked to become involved.

Reminders to those who supervise Province employees:

Please be familiar with due dates for payroll, performance appraisals, etc., and adhere to them. Being late holds up the process and it is the employee who suffers.

Should your employee be out of work due to their own illness, the illness of their spouse, or the illness of a child, contact Mary Ellen Garcia immediately.

Please contact Mary Ellen when hiring new employees, or disciplining or terminating current employees. Employees may not be terminated without first discussing with Mary Ellen. These procedures protect our employees, the Society of Mary and you!

Fraternally,

My Dear Brothers:

The Province "Commission for Zeal and Mission" gathered for its inaugural meeting at the Marycliff Community in Eureka, Mo., Oct. 28-30, 2015.

There were fruitful discussions about our sense of religious zeal and passion for our vocation, our common call to serve Mary's mission, our various Province ministries, and what is necessary to support the desire, drive and devotion that supports "good zeal."

The commission began developing a framework for addressing:
  • Supporting directors as mentors, shepherds, spiritual fathers and companions to their brothers
  • Focusing on the needs of brothers in times of generational or ministerial transition, helping them maintain positive energy about Marianist religious life and participation in our common mission
  • Focusing on the needs of younger brothers as they enter into the life of the Society at a time of change in the church
The next meeting of the Commission for Zeal & Mission is slated for late January.

Commission members: Bro. Reinaldo Berros, Fr. Bill Meyer, Fr. Bob Jones, Bro. Tom Redmond, Bro. Charles Johnson, Fr. Tim Eden, Bro. Bob Flaherty, Fr. Jack McGrath, Bro. Mark Motz. Not shown: Pat Wheadon, facilitator

Tomorrow is the feast (obligatory Memorial) of Blesseds Miguel, Joaqun, Sabino and Florencio. The liturgical texts for the celebration of the Eucharist can be found on the PORTAL under "Religious Resources" and then "Missal."
