From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

UD president's search

I want to update you on the progress of the presidential search at the University of Dayton. After the board of trustees and the members of the Provincial Council (UD Corporation) approved the position description, the search committee began working with Isaacson, Miller, a consultant group from Boston, to review nominations and applications, narrow the pool and conduct preliminary interviews.

The search committee, composed of 17 members including Fr. Jim Fitz and me, has selected a number of strong semifinalists for the next round of interviews, which will be conducted before Aug. 17. The executive committee of the board of trustees will meet on Aug. 17 to decide the next steps, including off-site meetings with an expanded and representative campus group which will offer feedback to the search committee. Another Marianist will be involved in this stage of the process. Until the finalists are determined, please note that the search is very confidential. A number of viable candidates hold responsible positions in their current employment.

Per the bylaws, the executive committee of the board makes the final determination of the candidate, but this nomination must be ratified by the members of the Provincial Council before going to the full board for approval.

Thanks to Fr. Jim for his helpful contribution during this process and to you for your prayers for a successful choice of a president to lead the University of Dayton.

CMSM

The Conference of Major Superiors of Men met for its annual assembly in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Aug. 6-8. Archbishop Joseph Tobin and Prof. Massimo Faggioli (St. Thomas University, St. Paul, Minnesota) were presenters on issues of consecrated life and the ecclesiology of Vatican Council II. Read a media release
for a full report. Bro. Joe Kamis continues as chair of Region V and a member of the national board.

Welcome and farewell

Welcome to Bro. Kumaraswamy (District of India) and Bro. Joseph Kamotho (Region of Eastern Africa), who recently arrived in Dayton. Bro. Kumar will be a member of the Chambers Street Community, and Bro. Joe, a member of the Stonemill-Kiefaber Community. Both will be enrolled in the master's program for educational leadership. Namaste and Karibu!

Fr. Callistus Jeje, who has been studying at the International Marian Research Institute for the past two years, has returned to the Region of Eastern Africa. He will continue work on his thesis and will return to UD during the coming year to complete his work and his defense.

Bros. Steve Grazulis and Timothy Phillips
also have returned to Eastern Africa after their home visits. Kwaherini to these brothers!

Fr. John Thompson will leave for Quertaro, Mexico, after the upcoming Provincial Council meetings. He will spend the first months in language study and then will assist the Mexican Marianists in developing an educational project.

Chapter - District of India

The annual chapter for the District of India will take place at the Marianist Novitiate in Ranchi, India, Aug. 17-19. Bro. Dennis Schmitz, provincial liaison for the District, will moderate the chapter and will visit the communities in the north during his one-month stay. This is an important chapter meeting. One of the propositions concerns an inclusive chapter representation, much as we have done in the Province to guarantee delegates from all areas.

The District also is preparing for a visit by the General Administration from Sept. 15 until Oct. 21. Please pray for our brothers in India, for their growth, development and deepening in their Marianist vocation.

From the Office of Development
This summer we greatly expanded the mission preaching program that Fr. David Paul started as a way to promote the "Partnering with the Poor" initiative. This year our brothers and priests have preached in 11 different dioceses in seven states and 28 different parishes in both English and Spanish, sharing stories about India or Eastern Africa. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the message about the work being done in our developing regions and to grow support for these ministries. Thank you to the following for their time and effort. If you're interested in this ministry, please contact Allison Hewitt.

Dear Brothers,

Bro. Paul Bredestege will spend the month of September in St. Louis, replacing Bro. Bob Resing at the front desk of the Provincial Office. He will live at the Maryland Avenue Marianist Community. Bro. Bob will spend the month reorganizing his art studio and will return to his ministry at the Provincial Office about Oct. 1.

My  Dear Brothers,

Cleveland Mass of Thanksgiving

Priests planning to concelebrate at this Mass on Sept. 13 should contact Donna Tucker at the Office of Religious Life by Thursday, Aug. 20, so we can issue a Letter of Suitability.

Official hymn for the Jubilee Year of Mercy

The Vatican has announced the official hymn for the Jubilee Year of Mercy (beginning Dec. 8) composed by British layman Paul Inwood and text written in Latin and Italian by Jesuit Father Eugenio Costa. This beautiful hymn, which includes lines from Scripture, is punctuated by the Latin phrase in aeternum misericordia eius ("his mercy is forever"), and is in the style of a Taize response and a Gelineau tone, which will make the piece memorable and easy to sing. Hear a brief explanation and excerpt of the hymn.

SLI Connect new webinar:
"Spiritual Exercises in Preparation for the Year of Mercy"

Join Capuchin Franciscan Father David Songy in an exploration of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, and learn particular ways to grow in the virtue of mercy. Brothers, this would be an excellent opportunity for a community meeting/evening. I hope you will consider it.

And finally . . .

I hope these summer weeks have been restful and renewing. It is not too late to spend a bit of time reposing/resting in the presence of the Lord. My wish for you is the wise counsel of the New Testament scholar N.T. Wright, who said: "The longer you look at Jesus, the more you will want to serve him in his work."

With fraternal affection,

From Bro. Ron Overman

Dear Brothers,

From the Office of JPIC

CMSM overwhelmingly passed a resolution, "Cherish All of Creation," on Aug. 7 at its national assembly in Charlotte, North Carolina. With this act, CMSM commits to a deeper engagement on this issue and transforming practices in communities where they and their members live and minister. "The biblical vision with Christ in the center of our lives and communities, along with our vows and our mission as religious, calls us to see the urgency of this issue, not simply as a justice and peace concern but as embedded in who we are," the document asserts.

We will be in touch soon to ask how communities and brothers can effectively and realistically live out this resolution, which was strongly supported in our recent Province survey. Read the official press release.

Fraternally,
