Province Retreat Assembly

June 25 - 28

From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

Province Retreat Assembly

Next week, we will be together for the Province Retreat Assembly. The planning committee has organized a fine event for us. We are grateful to the support staff at West Pine for their extra efforts. Thanks to everyone who has responded so positively. Let's continue to pray that the theme of the Retreat Assembly, "Fill the Jars," will provide focus and impetus for our Province during the coming years.

District of India

On July 1, Bro. Dennis Schmitz and I will meet with the leadership from the District of India. Bro. Augustus Surin and Fr. Sudhir Kujur will be present for the Retreat Assembly, then meet to discuss issues facing the District of India. As already announced, Dennis will serve as the Province liaison with the District and will spend extended periods of time each year with the Indian Marianists.

General Leadership Assembly

On July 3, Bro. Joe Kamis, Augustus and I will leave for Rome to attend the General Leadership Assembly, a gathering of major SM leadership. The meeting is scheduled between General Chapters and will run from July 5-20. In addition to reports from the General Administration and unit leadership, the major agenda item is the "zonal restructuring" which was mandated by the last General Chapter.

St. Aloysius Parish

On Sunday, June 21, Bro. Joe Kamis and I will join the community of St. Aloysius Parish to celebrate the 35 years of Marianist service in the parish and to bid farewell to the brothers there. A larger celebration is planned for Sunday, Sept. 13, with Bishop Richard Lennon at the Cathedral of St. John to mark the end of 165 years of Marianist presence and service in the Diocese of Cleveland.

Despite this transition, Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School will remain part of our sponsorship network. Special thanks to Fr. Ted Cassidy and Bros. Paul Hoffman, Will Halloway and Bob Dzubinski for all they have done during the last year to guarantee a smooth transition to new parish leadership. Thanks as well to Bro. Tom Payne who is in Cleveland to assist with the move.

Aspirants

Two aspirants from the Region of Korea hope to come to Dayton to improve their English in preparation for novitiate formation next year. Bro. Dennis Schmitz and Fr. Chris Wittmann are working to secure their visas. Let's pray for them and all our brothers in formation. May they see in the perpetually professed of our Province examples of holiness and zeal that will encourage their own religious vocations.

Fraternally,

From Bro. Joe Kamis

Dear Brothers:

Fr. Ted Cassidy (St. Clair Marianist Community, Cleveland) will move to the Alumni Hall Marianist Community in Dayton on July 8, 2015. He will be in ministry at the University of Dayton.

We wish Ted well in his transition.

Fraternally,

Dear Brothers:

Integrity of Creation

Sr. Leanne Jablonski, director of MEEC, wrote a cover story article in the spring issue of Network's Connection. Leanne reflects on the intersection of faith and science, as well as the hope created by the upcoming encyclical on the environment. Read the article

International Human Rights Law and Fracking

On behalf of the Sisters of Mercy NGO and our colleagues in the NGO Mining Working Group, I share their new report, A Guide to Rights-based Advocacy: International Human Rights Law and FrackingThe report demonstrates how the international human rights framework can initiate rights-based advocacy against human rights violations that result from hydraulic fracturing (fracking).

This report is a work in progress, inviting further contributions from around the world. A Spanish copy will be available in mid-July.

Papal Visit from the United Nations

With the impending release of the latest Papal encyclical due out today, June 18, Pope Francis recently welcomed UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to Vatican City.

Read an interesting article noting Pope Francis as "the Pope of the Poor," especially in relation to environmental justice. In collaboration with MEEC, we will continue to share information and resources related to the new encyclical.

In justice and peace,
