Jubilee Celebration
Cupertino

June 6

From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

Congratulations and gratitude to the novitiate community for a wonderful celebration of first vows for Bro. Allen Pacquing. The community hosted many visitors and provided first class Marianist hospitality. This was the first major gathering at the new novitiate facility. Although the chapel furniture has not been moved in, the photo below gives an idea of the wonderful space that was planned by the architect, Fr. Chris Wittmann, Bro. Martin Erspamer, OSB, and others. Read Fr. Chris Wittmann's fine homily from the profession Mass.

Bro. Syl Burkemper professed temporary vows on May 17 in San Antonio. Read the homily Fr. Bill Behringer gave at his profession Mass.

Bro. Joe Kamis congratulates Bro. Allen Pacquing as Fr. Chris Wittmann, novice director, looks on.

Personnel

Fr. Dave Fleming has completed two years of service at the Marianist novitiate in Ranchi, India. He has been assigned to the community of the General Administration in Rome, where he will serve as a resource person, working in research and publications about the Marianist charism. Dave will continue to teach a semester each year at the UD Deepahalli campus in Bangalore.

Bro. Lester Kaehler has accepted a reappointment as vice rector of the International Marianist Seminary in Rome. We are grateful to Lester for his generosity and availability.

Bro. Bernie Hartman has pleaded guilty to charges arising from the claims of two women in Australia. He also was convicted on three of eight counts coming from another person but acquitted on charges from a fourth individual. The trials have ended. The Plea will be lodged on July 8 with supporting evidence to mitigate his sentence. Sentencing will probably take place by mid-July. There has been little media attention, but there will probably be reports arising from the Plea and sentencing in July. Please keep this information confidential until reports are made in the media. Any inquiries should be directed to Diane Guerra.

 Current Council with new members

Current/new Provincial Council members: Kamis, Solma, Schmitz, Brink, Thompson, Gonzalez, Giardino, Bautista, Meyer and Overman. Not shown: Charles Johnson

On Friday, May 22, the Provincial Council met in Dayton with the four members who will join the Council in July -- Bro. Tom Giardino (Education), Bro. Ron Overman (Temporalities), Fr. John Thompson (Councilor/Mexico) and Bro. Dennis Bautista (Councilor). The current Council members highlighted issues, projects and evaluations from their offices and position. The sharing was rich and helpful. Thanks to Bro. Charlie Johnson for making the meeting arrangements. Photo courtesy of Bro. Saju.

As we savor these days after Pentecost, let's pray for all our brothers who are ill and those in initial formation. Let's also pray for a generous outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our upcoming Province Retreat Assembly.

Fraternally,

From Bro. Joe Kamis

Dear Brothers:

The General Administration has approved the Acts of the 24th Session of the Provincial Chapter of the Province of the United States. Read the letter from the superior general.

The General Administration complimented the Chapter on its efforts, especially in the areas of sponsorship, mission and leadership, as these areas will help the new Council focus its efforts. The Council and the Chapter express appreciation to the General Administration for its care and concern for our Province.

Fraternally,

From Bro. Ed Brink

Dear Brothers:

In consultation with the Provincial Council, Bro. Ed Violett has accepted the position of vice president for academic affairs at Our Lady of the Lake College in Baton Rouge, La., effective June 1. This is an administrative appointment with a faculty status of full professor. Dr. Tina Holland, president of Our Lady of the Lake, looks forward to Ed assisting the college in its development and outreach. The college wants to strengthen and diversify its academic offerings, particularly in the arts, humanities and social sciences. We wish Ed the best of luck and success in this new venture.

Bro. Bob Politi

This weekend Fr. Marty and I will attend an event marking the retirement of Bro. Bob Politi after 50 years of dedicated service to Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati. View a story about Bob

filmed by a Cincinnati TV station. In addition to his work at Purcell Marian, Bob works with other brothers of the DeSales Crossings community at St. Francis de Sales parish. After a retreat this summer, Bob will continue his work at the parish. Bob, many thanks for your great example of dedicated service.

Fraternally,

From Office of JPIC

Dear Brothers:

Wonderful news

I am extremely excited to announce that Maureen O'Rourke is the

inaugural full-time coordinator for Marianist PULSE (Partners in Urban Leadership, Service and Education), effective June 29.

Maureen currently serves as coordinator of Marianist activities and scholarship with the University of Dayton's Office for Mission and Rector. She brings vast experience and a deep history and passion for the Marianist charism. With more than 10 years of service to the University of Dayton, NACMS and the former Marianist Volunteer Program, Maureen is a natural fit to lead this innovative program.

This new Province ministry is a postgraduate servant leadership program which involves service in urban areas, community living and rich Marianist formation. PULSE will be a fertile training ground for Marianist leaders who will animate the Marianist Family in the future.
