From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

Fr. Manuel Corts, superior general, has convoked the General Leadership Assembly, to take place in Rome July 5-19. This meeting is scheduled between General Chapters and brings together the leadership of all Marianist units from around the world. A particular concern for this meeting is the zonal restructuring of the Society of Mary, mandated by the General Chapter of 2012. Joe Kamis and I will leave St. Louis July 3 and return July 20. Bro. Augustus Surin from the District of India also will attend the GLA.

Visit to the Sector of Mexico

I want to thank the brothers in the Sector of Mexico for the hospitality and welcome that was shown to Bro. Francisco Gonzlez, Fr. John Thompson and me during our recent visit. We met with sector leadership and had a plenary meeting with all members of the sector.

I look forward to seeing many members of the Province at our Province Retreat Assembly in about six weeks. Let us continue to pray for one another.

Fraternally,

Bro. Joe Kamis

Dear Brothers:

Bro. Steven O'Neil, who spent the past six months in India, will join the Marianist Residence Community in San Antonio this week, working with the staff in computer training. We welcome Bro. Steve back to the United States and wish him the best in his new community and ministry.

Fraternally,

My Dear Brothers:

We are happy to announce the Province Commission for Zeal & Mission.
The focus of this commission is to support and strengthen the individual and communal spiritual life of brothers at all stages of formation and growth. Read more below, including the names of Commission members.

The Commission will:
  • act as an important advisory counsel to the Assistant for Religious Life in his ministry of attending to the interior life of the Province; and,
  • support the ongoing formation of brothers at every stage of their lives, with particular attention to generational issues in daily community life and ministry.

Please remember Sylvester Burkemper in your prayers. Syl will reenter the Society of Mary this Sunday, professing temporary vows on the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord within the context of the Community Eucharist at the Marianist Residence in San Antonio.

With fraternal affection,

From Bro. Ed Brink

Dear Brothers:

Vice President for Mission & Rector

St. Mary's University has announced the appointment of Fr. Tim Eden as its new vice president for mission and rector. Tim comes with a great deal of experience to this important role of promoting and enhancing the Catholic and Marianist mission of the university. Congratulations and best wishes to Tim in his new role.

Frs. Eden, Vela

After years of teaching and six years in the vice president position, Fr. Rudy Vela will take a personal and professional sabbatical in the next year. During his tenure of service, Rudy established the "Catholic Intellectual Tradition" lecture series as an important element of university life. Among other projects, he oversaw the renovation of Assumption Chapel and is leading the second cohort of St. Mary's leaders in the "Footsteps of Chaminade" tour.

In his statement announcing Rudy's transition, President Thomas

Mengler said, "Rev. Vela has been an integral member of the university community for many years and has made significant contributions as an administrator and faculty member. There is no doubt he will continue to play an important role, and undertake new initiatives, when he returns to St. Mary's after his sabbatical."

Our best wishes and thanks to both men who support an important aspect of the Province mission.
