From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

This weekend, Bro. Francisco Gonzlez, Fr. John Thompson and I will visit the Sector of Mexico. This will give Frankie an opportunity to say goodbye to the brothers with whom he's worked for the past five years. This will also be an introduction for John to the communities of the Sector and the Mexican Marianists. In the next few months, John will move to Quertaro and begin a program to improve his Spanish language skills. He will then work with the Mexican Marianists in planning an educational work for the Sector.

I want to thank Bro. Francisco for his time, effort and leadership as the Provincial liaison with the Mexican Marianists and thank Fr. John for his willingness to take up this service.

Transitions

As some of you know, Fr. Richard Wosman has chosen to step down as president of Central Catholic High School in San Antonio. Richard has requested to be incardinated in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and has been contracted to serve as president of John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in St. Louis next year. We have received the formal indult from the Vatican, and both schools will make announcements soon about their leadership for next year. The "waiting period" for definitive incardination in the archdiocese is at least three years. So, we pray for Richard with gratitude for the years he shared Marianist life with us, and we wish him fraternal best wishes as he pursues another direction in his Christian and priestly vocation.

Prayers

Thank you, brothers, for your continued prayers for Bro. Bernie Hartman. On Tuesday, we heard from Bro. Dennis Schmitz that the trial will likely conclude this week and the gag order will be lifted. During the sentencing phase, there will probably be considerable media attention in Australia and possibly here as well. Perhaps the sadness and embarrassment this can cause will lead us to a deeper sense of humility in our own frailty and sinfulness, honesty in our vocations, and greater concern for both victims and offenders. Prayers for all concerned are needed and appreciated.

Retreat Assembly guests

As we look ahead to the Province Retreat Assembly, there will be many Marianists from other units joining us: Bro. Tom Cleary and Fr. Gary Long from the Province of Meribah; Bro. Augustus Surin, Fr. Sudhir Kujur, Bro. Larry McBride and Fr. Dave Fleming from India; and from Mexico, Fr. Raymundo Domnguez Gonzlez, Bro. Rgulo Garca Hernndez and Bro. Gobi Torres Nazaro. Bro. Tim Phillips and Bro. Steve Grazulis will come from Nairobi and Lusaka, respectively. Finally, Marianists from other units who are studying or living in the Province will join us, including Bro. Bernard Ombima from the Chaminade Seminary in Rome.

New Provincial Council

On May 22, the four new members of the Provincial Council will meet with the current members to begin a process or orientation and handing-over. The meeting will take place in Dayton during the weekend of the first profession.

First vows

Let us join Allen Pacquing as he prepares for his first profession on May 23. There will be visitors for the profession in Dayton, and this will allow the novitiate community to showcase the new novitiate facility. Let us also remember Sylvester Burkemper, who will make his profession of temporary vows in San Antonio on May 17. We are very happy to have these two new members of our Province.

Fraternally,

Dear Brothers:

The minutes with four appendices and the Acts of the Chapter of the 24th Session of the Provincial Chapter are now on the Marianist PORTAL.

From Fr. Bill Meyer

My Dear Brothers:

This past week Fr. Steve Tutas, Bro. Bill Campbell and I, at the request of Fr. Marty, traveled to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to represent the Province at the funeral rites for our brother, Archbishop Raymond Roussin, SM, archbishop emeritus of Vancouver. Also present at the funeral were Fr. Grard Blais, regional superior of Canada, Fr. John Kracher, who presided and preached at the vigil service, and Bro. Joseph Andr.

Ray was no stranger to Marianists in the United States, having made his initial formation with the former St. Louis Province and having graduated from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. It was inspiring to listen to the reflections of those who gathered last Friday and Saturday. Many spoke of his great skill in building community in the three dioceses where he ministered (Gravelbourg, Victoria and Vancouver). Many spoke of Ray as a kind and generous brother who lived and shared his life from a deep life of prayer and community. May he rest in peace!

From Bro. Ed Brink

Dear Brothers:

The board of regents of Chaminade University of Honolulu has voted to approve an extension of Bro. Bernie Ploeger's term as president of the university through June 2017. Bro. Bernie announced he would not seek an extension beyond that time. He has served as president since March 2009.

The university will begin a search for a new president in the next two years, assuring a smooth transition to new leadership. We are very grateful for Bernie's outstanding leadership and his many contributions to Chaminade University and our Marianist educational mission. His service to CUH has been a tremendous gift to us as a Province and to the many served by the university. Let's continue our prayers for Bernie and his ministry in the next two years.

Board of Regents Chair Vaughn Vasconcellos said of Bro. Bernie, "His quiet style of leadership allowed the university to achieve sound progress across the board, and has led to an overall transformation of our campus."

Office of Sponsorship

Dear Brothers:

To celebrate our sponsored ministries signing the new "Sponsorship & Services Agreements," the Office of Sponsorship will present a special plaque to each of the schools and retreat centers that are sponsored by the Province. We have offered to schedule a representative of the Province to formally present this plaque to each sponsored ministry. We will arrange for members of the Province to make these presentations and will provide a sample script.

Our new agreements affirm the desire of the Province and its sponsored ministries to continue and strengthen their collaborative relationship and partnership in mission.

Regards,

Dan Donnelly

Director, Office of Sponsorship
