From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

At the recent meeting of the Provincial Chapter, I shared a letter from the Provincial Council to the General Administration in response to the GA's recent visit. The visit was much appreciated and the visitation report gave us much food for thought as we plan for the future. I now share that letter with all Province members.

Readmission to the Society of Mary

Sylvester Burkemper, who has been living at the Marianist Residence community in San Antonio since January 2014, asked to be readmitted to the Society of Mary. He has been under the direction of Fr. Bill Behringer since last August, studying the developments in religious life and in the Society of Mary since his departure in 1979. The Provincial Council received the approval of the superior general. Syl will make profession of temporary vows on May 17 in San Antonio. Please join me in welcoming Syl back to the Society of Mary as a professed member. Thanks to Fr. Behringer for this service to the Province.

May we all continue to savor Easter peace and joy, the gifts of the Risen Lord.

Fraternally,

Dear Brothers:

Mount Saint John

The Provincial Council has approved the next steps in placing 67 acres of the Mount Saint John Nature Preserve under a "Conservation Easement" using funding from the State of Ohio. A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement that allows landowners (in this case, the Marianist Province of the United States) to limit commercial development on their property, in perpetuity, while retaining private ownership of the land. It allows landowners to protect natural resources and preserve scenic open space while retaining the ability to sell the land. A sale would carry with it the conservation easement. Read a Q&A on Conservation Easements.

The core of the campus (Novitiate, Bergamo Center, Marianist Mission, Queen of Apostles Chapel, Sieben Hall, Meyer Hall, St. Joseph Hall and the new Chaminade Center) and the front portion of the property, about 80+ acres, are not included in this conservation easement.

In 2013, the Council formed the "Land Use Committee" to study this proposal and to advise the Council on options. Fr. Paul Marshall was the point person for the committee. The committee included Fr. Jim Fitz, Linda Hayes, Sr. Leanne Jablonski, Bro. Joe Kamis, Greg Martz, Carol Ramey, Bro. Jack Somerville, Fr. Chris Wittmann and Chip Williamson. The Council is grateful to the committee for the work they have done in the past years.

Dear Brothers:

Meeting of office directors

Last fall, the Provincial Council gathered directors of programs and offices who report to the Provincial Council to enhance communication between the participants, provide support and deepen engagement with the mission of the Province. The meeting was well received. To continue the engagement, the Provincial Council is planning a gathering every 2-3 years, supplemented with conference calls through the year.

Office Directors Meeting, fall 2014

In March, about half the group joined the Council for a call, and in April the other directors joined us. The Council updated the directors on its work and the directors did the same. The work of the Province has many facets and a vast breadth, but one mission. These meetings keep the mission in focus while being attentive to the contributions of many people. With more than 250 lay employees, we have many collaborators. Please continue to pray for these men and women who make our Province mission possible.

Saint Louis School - new president, principal

Medeiros
I am pleased to announced two new positions at Saint Louis School in Honolulu: Glenn Medeiros, Ed.D., has been appointed president, and Sione Thompson, M.Ed., has been appointed principal. They will begin their new positions July 1, 2015.

Medeiros has been assistant professor at Chaminade University of Honolulu. His career includes serving as vice principal at Maryknoll School in Honolulu. Thompson most recently served as assistant head of school at SLS.

The Marianist Province of the United States is very happy to have this new leadership team in place. Our commitment to Saint Louis School in particular and Catholic education in Hawai'i depends upon excellent leaders ready to embrace the Marianist philosophy of education.

Dear Brothers:

There is a growing trend on university campuses for students and staff to invite, encourage and put pressure on their university's administration to divest endowments from the fossil fuel industry. View a recent video from Harvard University that encapsulates this movement.

The University of Dayton made a big move 10 months ago to support mission, sustainability and human rights by divesting coal, fossil fuel from their $670 million investment pool. Read more.

The Province also promotes the integrity of creation by engaging with corporations and encouraging them to be more socially responsible on the environment, human rights and governance. We have seen many successes and positive changes as active faith-based members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) over the past 40+ years. Read ICCR's most  recent publication, "Invested in Change: Faith-Consistent Investing in a Climate-Challenged World."

In justice and peace,

Brian Reavey
