From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

Provincial Chapter

We have concluded the meeting of the Provincial Chapter. Thanks to everyone who helped prepare for it, including the brothers who participated in the pre-Chapter meetings around the Province. The Chapter was well run by our moderator, Fr. Oscar Vasquez, and featured substantive issues for the life and mission of the Province. I will send a letter outlining the work of the Chapter in a future issue of "Notes." Perhaps this letter could serve as a good basis for post-Chapter meetings.

Travels

This week I'm joining Fr. Andr Ftis in Rome for a visitation of the Chaminade Seminary, followed by the meeting of the Extended General Council. The EGC includes members of the General Council and zonal presidents of the Society of Mary around the world. The focus of the meeting is the restructuring of zones of the Society of Mary mandated by the last General Chapter. Your prayers for these important gatherings are appreciated.

Personnel

Fr. Jack McGrath will return to the Province on March 24, residing temporarily at the Chambers Street Community. He will become a permanent member of the novitiate community when the new facility is completed -- set for the auspicious date of April 3, Good Friday!

Retreat Assembly 2015

The Retreat Assembly Committee has been working diligently and the plans look good. Please complete the registration form by March 27. Contact Donna Tucker with questions. I think this will be a wonderful gathering for the Province.

New Provincial Council

I hope to announce a new Provincial Council in the next week to 10 days. Thanks, again, to the many brothers who offered suggestions and recommendations.

Let us pray for each other during this season of Lent, asking for a conversion of heart and a deeper experience of God's forgiving grace.

Fraternally,

From Fr. Bill Meyer

My Dear Brothers:

In last Saturday's Gospel we heard one of the great meditations of the Lenten journey, the beautiful Lukan "Parable of the Prodigal Son." All of us have had our encounters with the prodigal, be they community member, family member, or co-worker, who never seem to be able to get it together, the struggling soul who is in constant need of our support and affirmation. Most of the prodigals we meet do not suffer the major life changing train wreck that the Gospel prodigal experiences. The "prodigals" we encounter are more likely the chronically late, the constantly lost, the always-in-crisis whose demands take their toll on our time and patience.

In hearing Jesus' story, we want to be the ever-present, unconditionally loving brother, minister, mentor, the ever-faithful friend to all. But we understand where the older brother is coming from: Enough is enough ... It's time to grow up ... Take responsibility for your actions!

The father and the older brother represent the choice we often have to make in dealing with the prodigals: offering unconditional help and support, or demanding accountability and maturity. It can be a tough choice. But, Jesus asks us who seek to follow him to always make a way for the prodigal to return, to make it possible for the prodigal to get his or her life together, to offer a hand to lift the prodigal out of the mud he or she has fallen into.

Jesus calls us to seek reconciliation before all else; to be ready to take the first difficult step to forgive and seek forgiveness. My brothers, be the "father" of mercy and welcome the prodigal you encounter today.

Merciful God, make us vessels of your mercy. When we are lost, may your mercy enable us to find our way back; when we are searching for our lost loved ones, may your mercy support us in our anxious waiting; when we are hurt and angry, may your mercy be a well from which we draw from your abundant patience and understanding.  Amen.

From Bro. Ed Brink

Dear Brothers:

Chaminade College Preparatory, West Hills, Calif., is seeking a principal for the high school. Read more about the position.

If a Province member is interested in applying for the position, please contact me as soon as possible. I would encourage all brothers to read the posting and think about people you know who could be good candidates. A former student or a colleague you have worked with might be interested. Your encouragement to individuals to apply for the position can be very helpful in identifying qualified candidates. And, of course, please keep the search process in your prayers.

Fraternally,

From the Office of JPIC

Dear Brothers:

March against bullying

Join us on May 1 for the world's largest anti-bullying rally. The "Million T-Shirt March Against Bullying" is an effective way to create awareness and raise funds to combat bullying in our schools. Our Province co-sponsors this national rally promoting the dignity of every human person, especially students in our schools. Visit the Million T-Shirt March website for more information.

Marianist Call to Advance Justice

As communicated to directors last week, I will complete all "Marianist Call to Advance Justice" programs this spring (Ohio and Missouri) and next fall (Hawai'i, Los Angeles and Texas). Please contact me with your availability if you haven't done so already. The MCAJ program invites each brother and community to reflect on their individual and communal call to advance justice.

Program goals are to affirm current involvement with justice, peace and the integrity of creation, to reflect upon and continue to discern your community's call to advance justice, to provide continual support and new opportunities for engagement, and to share what's happening nationally.

The program does not demand you and/or your community to take on new projects or make time commitments; rather, it's a formational and educational experience for you and your community. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

In justice and peace,

Brian Reavey
, director

Plans are under way to honor the contribution of Marianists in the Cleveland area as the Province withdraws from the city after almost 160 years.
