Ash Wednesday

From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

On Saturday evening, Jan. 31, Bro. Ray Fitz was honored at the meeting of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) with the Hesburgh Award, the highest recognition for significant service in Catholic higher education. It was a fitting and well deserved recognition of the many accomplishments of Bro. Ray over his long tenure as president of the University of Dayton (1979-2002). The sustained applause was ample testimony to the respect and admiration of the ACCU and his many peers. Congratulations, Bro. Ray!

At the award ceremony, Fr. George Cerniglia, Bro. Ed Brink, Fr. Jim Fitz, Bro. Ray Fitz, Bro. Bernie Ploeger and Fr. Marty Solma

PULSE

Last week I discussed the new Province pilot program called Marianist PULSE (Partners in Urban Leadership, Service and Education), a two-year, postgraduate servant leadership program. A search committee led by Bro. Charlie Johnson is in the process of recruiting the first coordinator of PULSE. The job description is available at www.marianist.com/jobs. Be sure to contact anyone you know who might be a good candidate.

Read about PULSE program details on the PORTAL.

Fraternally,

From Fr. Bill Meyer

My Dear Brothers:
.

Ash Wednesday is Feb. 18.

To prepare for Lent, you may wish to read the Holy Father's 2015 Lenten message.

Register for gatherings celebrating "hope"

I mentioned recently that the Religious Formation Conference is sponsoring a series of one-day regional gatherings celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life focusing on the theme of "hope." These gatherings are accessible to three regions of the Province. Why not plan a community day to celebrate Consecrated Life by attending a conference near you? Registration is now open. Register here.

Pope Francis' homily on the Feast of the Presentation

Pope Francis delivered a beautiful homily to celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord and the World Day for Consecrated Life. Read the homily here.

Personnel

After much prayer and discernment, Seung Cheol Peter Choi has withdrawn from the formation process. He has returned to Korea from the novitiate in Dayton, where he was studying English as an aspirant. We wish Peter the best and offer him our prayers as he goes through this transition.

The Province also wishes to thank the Korean Regional Council for the recent visit of Bro. Paul Kim, SM, to the novitiate. Bro. Paul is the vocation/aspirancy director of Korea. His visit enhanced the collaboration in formation of the Region of Korea and the Province of the United States.

With fraternal affection,

Dear Brothers:

Human trafficking

Experts estimate that over 20 million people are victims of human trafficking. The first "International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking" is Feb. 8, the feast of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan. She dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting those who suffer. On Feb. 8, you can help raise awareness and act to end the violence and injustice that affect victims of modern-day trafficking (see links below).

Learn more about human trafficking. Read more information about the International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking.

New intern

I am pleased to welcome Adam Braun, professional writing intern, to our NGO at the United Nations, Marianists International. Adam will report to me and serve the NGO until his college graduation in May. He will help with projects including NGO resources and updates for religious and lay communities, website content and NGO presentations and reports.

LGBT resource

Each community will soon receive one copy of the recently published resource, "Addressing LGBT Issues with Youth: A Resource for Educators." This guide assists educators when addressing various expressions of sexuality with young people. It was initiated by MSJC's LGBT Issue Team and endorsed by the Marianist Family Council. The printing costs were high, but you can duplicate the booklet at the MSJC website. I'll let you know when the link is

available (in a couple of weeks), soon after the schools and other ministries receive theirs in the mail.

In justice and peace,
