Blessed Christmas

Dec. 25

St. John, Apostle & Evangelist

Dec. 27

From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

The members of the General Administration will meet with the Provincial Council tomorrow at the conclusion of their nine-week visitation of the Province of the United States. We will have a farewell for them over the weekend, and they will return to Rome early next week. Thanks to the communities and ministries for their warm welcome and hospitality. Thanks, also, to Fr. Manolo, Fr. Andr, Bro. Max and Bro. Mike for their time, effort, patience and good humor during the visit.

District of India

I will travel to India on Dec. 26, returning to St. Louis on Jan. 3.

On Jan. 1, I will assist with the installation of the new District Council. On Jan. 2, at the end of the District Assembly, three Marianists in India will profess perpetual vows: Bro. Balaswamy A., Bro. George Hans and Bro. Peter Paul K.

Please pray for these brothers, for the new leaders, and for the success of this important District event.

Christmas joy!

The members of the Provincial Council join me in wishing Province members a blessed and joy-filled Christmas and New Year. You will be in our prayers during this holy season. Please remember our donors and supporters who rely upon our prayers. Remember, too, our brothers who are ill and in need of our prayerful support. As we celebrate God-with-us, let us offer Mary's warmth of welcome to Christ and to those whose lives we will touch this Christmas. Our next issue of "Notes" will be Dec. 31.

Merry Christmas from all of us at West Pine!

Fraternally,

From Fr. Bill Meyer

My Dear Brothers:

The blessings of Emmanuel.

In Saint Augustine's Christmas sermon (#190) he writes:

He lies in a manger, but he holds the world.

He nurses at his mother's breast, but he feeds the angels.

He is wrapped in swaddling clothes, but he robes us in the garment of immortality.

He is given milk, but at the same time he is adored.

He finds no room at the inn, but he builds a temple for himself in the hearts of all who believe.

That infirmity might be made strong, strength has been made weak.

Let us, therefore, not diminish but marvel

all the more at his human birth.

Let us try to comprehend the humble stake he accepted for our sakes.

And then, let us be kindled with love, so that we may come to his eternal day.

As we celebrate this incomprehensible feast of God-with-us,  may you know that you are loved!

A blessed Christmas!

With fraternal affection,

P.S.  Don't forget that Jan. 1 + The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God -- is also World Day for Peace. Check the US Conference of Catholic Bishops website for wonderful resources.

Dear Brothers:

Join Her Mission endowment campaign

Congratulations to Fr. David Paul, who has secured the first major gift of $350,000 for the Province's Join Her Mission endowment campaign. The donor attended St. Mary's High School and sits on the board. Their two boys attended Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis.

While the donor is very active with both institutions, they first came to give major gifts to the Province through an ALIVE magazine article on Chaminade Secondary School in Malawi. This gift is in honor of the late Fr. Michael Barber, who taught for many years at St. Mary's. The gift will be paid in the form of stock over five years, but will have a lasting impact for many years to come.

Please call me at 314.533.1207 if you're interested in finding out how you can help.

Regards,

Dear Brothers:

Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies

The breadth and depth of our Province's efforts for justice, peace and the integrity of creation efforts are as diverse as our membership. A critical tool for the promotion of JPIC is education. I'd like to highlight one of our most unique educational institutions.

The Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles is the only research institute of its kind in the world. It is fully supported by the Marianists, and Fr. Jim Heft serves as its president. The institute recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary.

Read more about the institute,
including a list of books on a range of social justice subjects.

In justice and peace,
