Provincial Council
Dayton

Oct. 17 - 19

From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

District of India

After the visitation to the District of India and our consultation for district leadership, the Provincial Council has appointed Bro. Augustus Surin to a second term as district superior. Fr. Sudhir Kujur has been appointed assistant district superior, assuming as well the duties of the Office of Religious Life. Read my letter to the brothers of India.

Bro. Augustus will soon begin a consultation of the district membership before appointing his Council. There are significant challenges facing the District, and we are grateful to Bro. Augustus and Fr. Sudhir for their willingness to assume these leadership positions.

Bro. Augustus Surin and Fr. Sudhir Kujur

Please continue to pray for the District of India as it prepares for a District Assembly at the end of December. I will be present for that assembly and will install the leadership team on Jan. 1. On Jan. 2, we will celebrate the perpetual vows of Bros. Balaswamy A., George Hans and Peter Paul K.

General Administration visit

Tonight I will host a dinner for the GA and the Marianist ministry leaders in Dayton. Joining the gathering will be Sr. Laura Leming as a representative of the Marianist Sisters and the outgoing and incoming chairs of the Marianist Lay Network of North America (MLNNA) - Rudy Reyes and Mike Wasno.

Tomorrow the Provincial Council will meet with the GA for a mid-visit conversation.

Let us remember Fr. Joe Priestley who died on Saturday evening - for his peace and union with Our Lord and our Blessed Mother.

Fraternally,

From Fr. Bill Meyer

My Dear Brothers:

"...a critical time..."

During the General Administration's visit, brothers have asked about the status of Blessed Father Chaminade's cause for canonization. Bro. Michael McAward begins with "it's a critical time . . ." Critical because a 727-page summary of medical and personal testimony has been given to the medical council of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. This board will examine the case and vote on whether there is a medical explanation for Rachel Baumgartner Lozano's cure from the Askin's tumor in 2004. Read the letter from Fr. Antonio Gascn, our postulator general, on page 3 of Via Latina 22.

Please remember this intention in the intercessions of Morning and Evening Prayer, or consider recitation of the "Prayer for Canonization" found in Prayers for Marianists on page 36.

Two other good reads

"In These or Similar Words: Praying and Crafting the Language of the Liturgy" by Paul Turner is an excellent book that helps readers understand the difficulty of the new translation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal. The glossary of challenging (my word) words found in Chapter 3 is worth the price. Order the book.

"The Spiritual Meaning of the Liturgy: School of Prayer, Source of Life" by Godffredo Boselli, a Benedictine monk. He says, "I am increasingly convinced that the decisive question that demands an answer from us is not so much how believers experience the liturgy, but whether believers live from the liturgy they celebrate." Order the book.

Another rosary opportunity

Bro. Dennis Schmitz shared a new approach to the rosary created by David Haas, "The Rosary of Saint James." This version stresses closeness to Mary, contemplation and service using the Letter of Saint James and the Magnificat.

With fraternal affection,

From the Office of Temporalities

This report is from Brian Reavey

Dear Brothers:

Bro. Don Geiger reported that the journal Science published an editorial promoting the role of religious institutions in dealing with sustainability. The publication also included a commentary from two individuals who attended a Vatican workshop in May called "Sustainable Humanity, Sustainable Nature: Our
Responsibility." Pope Francis is quoted concerning the effectiveness of religious institutions in promoting sustainability.
Read the editorial and the commentary

Two recent related issues from the University of Dayton: The university received a gift of $12.5 million to start a sustainability institute. Also, UD's board of trustees voted to divest the university's holdings (about five percent of its investments, or $35 million) in coal and fossil fuels.

In justice and peace,
