World Day of Prayer

Oct. 12

From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

General Administration

We had a fine meeting of the Province community directors last weekend at the Marianist Retreat and Conference Center in Eureka, Mo. Members of the General Council were present, and Fr. Manolo opened the gathering with a reflection on Marianist leadership and the challenges it presents. Thanks to the directors and members of the GA for the encouraging and helpful experience.

The General Council met with the West Pine staff on Tuesday morning before driving to Dayton for a visitation. The Provincial Council will meet in Dayton from Oct. 17-19 and will meet with the GA on Oct. 17 for a mid-point review of their visit.

Archives

In early November, Bro. Ed Brink and I will meet with Province Archivist Mary Kenney and representatives of St. Mary's University to assess the proposed space at the university to house the Province archives. We will then sign a "memorandum of understanding" with the university concerning the space and the future development of the archives.

Marianist Conference

This weekend, members of the Marianist Conference will meet in St. Louis to discuss the GA's proposal on zonal restructuring in the Society of Mary, a project mandated by the last General Chapter. Bro. Joe Kamis and I will be joined by Bro. Tom Cleary (Province of Meribah) and Fr. Grard Blais (Region of Canada). Fr. Garry Long (Meribah) is unable to attend.

Wishing the entire Province a fruitful celebration of the Marianist World Day of Prayer this weekend. Our condolences to Bro. Giancarlo Bonutti on the death of his mother and Bro. Bob Metzger on the death of his father. Let us also pray for the mother of Bro. David Betz, who entered hospice care.

Fraternally,

From Fr. Bill Meyer

My Dear Brothers:

As I write these words, it is the Feast of the Holy Rosary which ushers in this month traditionally dedicated to the Holy Rosary. Since 1206, when the rosary was given by Our Lady to St. Dominic, people have been praying what Pius Parsch referred to as "Mary's Psalter." Dear to the hearts of many saints and mystics such as Teresa of Avila, Francis de Sales, Louis de Monfort, Alphonsus Liguori and our own Blessed Father Chaminade, the rosary helps us to "enter the mysteries of Jesus and Mary."

Pope Benedict XVI helpfully pointed out:

"In our current world, so dispersive, this prayer (the Rosary) helps us to put Christ at the center, as the Virgin did, who meditated within all that was said about her Son, and also what he did and said. With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the center of our life, of our time, of our city, through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light sorrow and glory.

"May Mary help us welcome within ourselves the grace emanating from these mysteries, so that through us we can 'water' society, beginning with our daily relationships, and purifying them from so many negative forces, thus opening them to the newness of God."

Bro. Michael McAward shared with me a "Contemplative Rosary in Community" that has been used in the GA Community in Rome. Use the link below to view it. Maybe during this month of the Holy Rosary you could substitute the "Contemplative Rosary in Community" during your community Lectio Divina.

Queen of the Holy Rosary, pray for us!

Bro. Bob Moriarty

Congratulations to Bro. Bob Moriarty, who is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Pastoral Department of Small Christian Communities in the Archdiocese of Hartford, Conn. He has served as director of the department for 25 years. On Oct. 8, there was a banquet with Archbishop Blair presiding, followed by a presentation introducing "Christ Renews His Parish" retreats. They hope to attract young people to these retreats, which would be followed up by an invitation to a Small Christian Community in the parish.

With fraternal affection

Dear Brothers:

As we continue to advance justice as a Province, I invite you to reflect on Pope Francis' challenge: "A way has to be found to enable everyone to benefit from the fruits of the earth, and not simply to close the gap between the affluent and those who must be satisfied with the crumbs falling from the table."

World Food Day is a day of action against hunger. On Oct. 16, people around the world declare their commitment to eradicate hunger in our lifetime. World Food Day celebrates the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on Oct. 16, 1945, in Quebec, Canada.

Established in 1979, World Food Day has been observed in almost every country by millions of people. In North America, grassroots events and public awareness campaigns engage diverse audiences in action against hunger. From hunger walks and World Food Day dinners to meal packaging events and food drives, there are many ways for people to be a part of solutions to hunger.
